Tragedy struck early Tuesday morning on April 8, 2025, when a roof collapsed at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic. The Jet Set nightclub, located in the capital city of Santo Domingo, is a famous club in the National District. Early Tuesday morning, while merengue performer Rubby Perez was singing, the roof of the nightclub unexpectedly collapsed, trapping everyone inside under the rubble. Crews have been working around the clock attempting to rescue any possible survivors.

Reports currently vary on the death toll from the tragedy, as the death toll continues to rise. It is reported that anywhere between 18 to 27Â or more clubgoers have lost their lives, with an additional 150 injured. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the collapse. According to local police, the disaster occurred while known merengue singer Rubby Perez was performing. Perez is among those injured. Among those pronounced dead so far was politician Nelsy Cruz, the current governor of Montecristi in the Dominican Republic.
So far, there have been over 120 ambulance transfers to a local hospital, with some ambulances taking multiple victims at a time. The scene at the hospital was chaotic as officials attempted to announce the names of victims being treated. According to Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Center of Emergency Operations, rescue crews are still searching for survivors. “We presume that many of them are still alive, and that is why the authorities here will not give up until not a single person remains under that rubble.”
Santo Domingo Mayor Carolina MejÃa de Garrigó responded to the tragedy on her X account, posting, “Our city wakes up to a tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub. My deepest sympathy goes out to the families still waiting for news of their loved ones.” Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader toured the wreckage Tuesday and promised that all possible government resources would be deployed to attempt to save any remaining survivors. Crews will be working around the clock to remove the fallen debris.
Video footage taken in the popular Dominican Republic Jet Set discotheque shows the moments right before the roof collapsed. Victims reported believing there was an earthquake before realising the roof was collapsing. Families and friends could be heard screaming and searching for their loved ones. Over 400 rescue crew members are on the scene. The search and investigation are ongoing, and the death toll and number of injuries are expected to rise.
