3 Interesting Facts About Bengal Cats You Should Know

Bengal cats are known for their striking green eyes, shiny coats, and wild-like appearance. These cats are the product of more than 100 years of crossbreeding Asian leopard cats with domestic house cats. Though they may look fierce like their Asian leopard cat ancestors, they are quite the opposite.

For instance, they are affectionate, playful, and highly energetic, making them great pets for families with small children. Many say they are quite entertaining, so one thing is for sure: there will never be a dull moment with a Bengal present. Let’s look at three quick facts about the breed, such as its origin, temperament, and health.

Facts About the Origin of the Bengal Cats

So, where does Bengal originate from? Well, it emerged in 1889 as a hybrid breed. However, it would not become sought-after until the 1970s, when it was founded by Jean Mill. Being a cat breeder herself, Mill knew that exotic breeds were sought after around this time and were even sold in mainstream stores, including Harrods in the United Kingdom. Therefore, she is thought to have been among the first to successfully breed Bengals over many decades.

However, she is not the only one who has made strides toward the breed’s success. There are three other contributors: William Engle, Williard Centerwall, and Pat Warren. Even so, it was Mill who helped these cats become the must-have exotic breed they are today. As a result, in 1983, Bengal cats were introduced to the cat world as an experimental breed by the International Cat Association (TICA) and wouldn’t become fully recognized until 1993. Upon recognition, they would be classified into five separate breed categories, such as F1, F2, F3, F4, and F5.

Today, most Bengal cats are bred with others of the same genus. It is thought that crossbreeding is a factor in potential health issues with the breed. Official recognition by the Cat Fancier’s Association was not reached until 2016, making them a globally recognized breed apart from the United States.

Bengal Cat Health Facts

Like many exotic breeds, this one can be prone to potential health issues. Although they are typically healthy, it is wise to do research before adopting one of these kitties. Some of the more serious and common issues that Bengals experience are Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), Chronic Anemia, inherited Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), Lymphoma, Bilateral Luxating Patella, Anesthesia Sensitivity, Kidney Disease, Liver Disease, Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, and Feline Infection Peritonitis.

Minor and uncommon issues include hip dysplasia, dental disease, distal neuropathy, gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, and flat-chested kitten syndrome. Because of these issues, it is wise to visit a veterinarian at least once a year. While health issues are a cause for concern for these adorable felines, it does not mean that they are not as boisterous as other breeds.

Facts About the Bengal Cat’s Temperament

Aside from health issues, this is a very active and friendly cat breed. Some even call it the most doglike breed of feline. So, if you are looking for a cat that has all the characteristics of a typical feline but doesn’t look like one, you are in luck. It is also highly intelligent and inquisitive. Its personality is even considered overwhelming. Henceforth, if you are not a seasoned cat owner, then you should second-guess adopting a Bengal. They also tend to be very energetic, chatty, and affectionate.

They are energetic yet loving and require a lot of time and attention. If you decide that adopting one is in your near future, please weigh the pros and cons of this breed beforehand.
