Overrun With Mint? 5 Astonishing Ways To Use It

Growing mint seemed like a dream. The plant itself is beautiful, it produces a lovely smell, and who doesn’t love fresh tea? Imagine being able to pick your own mint every morning to steep on the front porch. It all sounds so good until you realize how much mint grows. Mint is the only herb that has ever overrun me. There’s so much of it! I am sick and tired of tea and water. Don’t want to let it go to waste, but what do we do with it now?

5. Dry It

One of the most simple things you can do with your excess mint is dry it! Depending on where you are located in the world, there may be seasons where it will not grow. During the winter here in Indiana, everything gets cold and frosted over.

With the Christmas season comes baking. Dry your mint in the summer and use it for winter baking! In order to dry it, just cut the herb at the base and tie it together with food-grade string. Hang upside down in a cool dry place for 1-2 weeks then store in an airtight container!

4. Oral Rinse

Let’s shut the big corps down! Get rid of your store-bought mouthwash that has crazy added ingredients (most of which we can not even pronounce) and make your own. The process is pretty simple. In fact, you only need three ingredients: water, mint, and hydrogen peroxide. Check out this recipe for exact measurements.

3. Tincture

Ready for a good one? A tincture is the most potent form you can preserve the herb in. You can extract the liquid and keep it for a good while. You can use it to ward off spiders, add a few drops to cotton balls, and leave them around. Another great use is to soothe an upset stomach or hiccups!

2. Mint Clay Shampoo

This use is a little bit out of the ordinary and may not be for everyone! However, a clay mint shampoo mixture might be what you need to rejuvenate the scalp. Not only does this freshen up the scalp, but it also helps to produce hair growth.

The shampoo calls for a few more ingredients than the others, but it will not disappoint! This blog post has a few other tips to do with mint as well.

1. Sugar Scrub

Last but certainly not least, a sugar scrub! If you are blessed, then you may have some additional herbs lying around that you can add to this mixture. All you need is an air-tight glass container, sugar, an oil of your choice ( I love vitamin E oil and Argan oil), and your favorite herbs!

Combine the ingredients in a mortar and pestle. Grind the herbs first so all of the good extract is released, add sugar and oil, and voila!
