Beware of These 6 Human Foods That Cats Can’t Eat

If you’re a cat owner, you know how curious they can be and that they don’t really think about what they put in their mouths. You might find your cat sniffing around the kitchen, snatching any scarps left behind, or, if your cat is anything like mine, biting off and swallowing pieces of an exercise mat… I wish I was joking.

However, it’s important to know that several human foods are not safe for cats. In this article, I’m going to go over some of these dangerous foods. Understanding these dangers can help keep your feline friends healthy and safe.

6 Things Cats Can’t Eat

Cherries

Cherries contain cyanogenic glycosides, Mostly in their seeds, stems, and leaves. When these parts of the cherry are consumed, the glycosides can release cyanide into the body. Cyanide is a toxin that can interfere with the body’s ability to transport oxygen.

If they were to consume cherries they can experience severe health issues. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, dilated pupils, red gums, and shock. If you suspect your pet has ingested any part of a cherry, seek veterinary care immediately.

Onions and Garlic

Onions and garlic contain thiosulfate. Thiosulfate can damage red blood cells, leading to hemolytic anemia.

If they were to consume onions or garlic it can lead to symptoms such as lethargy, weakness, and pale gums. Left untreated, this can result in severe anemia and may require blood transfusions in critical cases.

Caffeine

Caffeine can be found in many beverages such as coffee, tea, and energy drinks. It can also be found in some medications and diet pills. Pets that consume caffeine may experience restlessness, rapid breathing, heart palpitations, and muscle tremors. Severe cases can lead to seizures and death. Always keep caffeinated products away from your pet.

As a big coffee drinker, I remember learning that caffeine wasn’t safe for pets and became pretty concerned. Another one of my cats likes to drink out of any cups you have sitting around, so I became concerned that she would ingest my coffee without me realizing. Now I just make sure to drink my coffee out of a tumbler with a lid.

Grapes and Raisins

The exact toxic ingredient of grapes and raisins is still unknown, but we do know that they cause acute kidney failure in cats.

Pets that consume grapes or raisins may experience vomiting, lethargy, and abdominal pain. These symptoms can progress to more severe signs of kidney failure, such as reduced or absent urine output. Immediate veterinary attention is necessary if consumption is suspected.

Alcohol

Alcohol is rapidly absorbed in the body and will affect the central nervous system. Even small amounts can be dangerous.

Symptoms of alcohol poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, and disorientation. Severe cases can lead to coma and death. You must keep all alcoholic beverages and foods containing alcohol out of reach.

Just Be Cautious

It’s important to understand what’s unsafe for your pets. Whether it’s food, chemicals, or plants. But don’t let anxiety take over, just be mindful and you and your furry friend will be okay! Always remember that if you’re questioning something and have any concerns your vet is just a phone call away, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
