Vintage Cellphones and idle nostalgia. What do you think about when you hear this phrase? The first thing that comes to mind for most people is the Motorola Dynatac 800 X from the 1980s. These were large, boxy, awkward to hold, and not as accessible as today’s hand-held smartphone devices. And then there was the early 2000s era of more modernized devices which allowed us to become much more connected as a society.
I can remember observing people with these new and highly innovative devices and thinking to myself that in just a few years, more modernized versions will go far beyond making simple phone calls or texting. And I was right.
More and More Phones are Introduced
Shortly thereafter, companies including Motorola, Samsung, LG, and Kyocera rolled out phones such as the Razr, Chocolate, and Koi KX 2, with capabilities that allowed us to snap photos, send picture messages via a built-in camera, install ringback tones, and choose from over 100 ringtones pre-installed and for purchase.
It also enabled text-based social media notifications, surfing the web, and connecting to Bluetooth-capable devices. It would be an understatement to say that these devices were far ahead of their time.
The Vintage Cellphone and Nostalgic Appeal
As of today, however, most of us still have these devices thrown in a drawer somewhere or tucked away in a box in the back of our closets. We think of them as nothing more than a memento, not remembering their presence there until we begin reminiscing old memories of days passed.
But what else can you do with them? An obvious suggestion is to list your gently loved devices for purchase on eBay or donate them.
Why? The market for Vintage Phone Collectors is surprisingly big. Think about it: we are not the only ones who feel overwhelming nostalgia when holding a piece of the past. In fact, the Mobile Phone Museum sponsored by Vodaphone and housed strictly online, is devoted to that nostalgic feeling.
With over 2,700 phone models on display to date, the museum is always looking to expand its collection and, in fact, welcomes donations both objectively and monetarily. No donation is too big or too small. The most the museum has ever received is over 100 phones and as little as two.
As of present, the most sought-after vintage phones include but are not limited to the Mobira Senator, Nokia 6108, Nokia 6708, Kyocera VP-210, Orbitel Citifone, Ericsson TH377, Ericsson Hotline Combi 450-001, Ericsson 900 Pocket, and the Qualcomm pdQ. These can be found on the Museum’s Most Wanted List.
If the museum receives duplicate donations those will go to a much larger museum such as the Smithsonian. So, check those boxes of mementos and long-forgotten items at the bottom of your closet. You may be surprised to find that you are holding on to one of the items mentioned above!
