Hurry, Hurry, it’s not too late to have an abundant tomato crop in 2024. Even if you only have patio space. In most US zones you have until the end of June to plant your tomatoes. Tomatoes do not like the cold, so it is best to plant after the frost of the year in mid to late spring. What can you do if you love gardening and tomatoes but only have a patio?
Choose Your Favorite Tomato Variety
Use a starter plant, not seeds. Well, you can use seeds but it’s just a lot easier to pick up a few tomato plants from your local source. Choosing the best variety for your patio can be overwhelming, but don’t fret. Pick a variety that you like.
I have bush tomato plants on my patio because I like the deep green leaves, the more round and lower height of the plant as well as the produce. The bush tomato is a nice tomato for slicing in salad or on sandwiches. And this type is great for container gardening. Check out other varieties by clicking here.
Did you know any tomato can be grown in a container? That is why they make a great plant for your patio. Tomatoes love lots and lots of sun. The sunnier your patio the better.
I Have My Tomato Plants, Now What?
First, you will need the correct size container. I have my bush tomatoes in a 24” diameter container that looks like it’s ceramic but it’s plastic with drainage holes in the bottom. I could have used an 18” in diameter but the larger container looks nice in my space.
If you do not have the space for large containers, consider Tiny Tim tomatoes which can be grown in one gallon bucket or even a 10” diameter container. And, if you like starting from seeds, you can do this indoors. Sow them about ¼ in deep in acidic soil and you may need to keep the solid warm and under bright lights. They will germinate in 7-10 days.
I use premixed potting soil formulated for vegetables and I buy this from a garden center. You can make your own mix. The University of New Hampshire has just the right recipe for you. You will need a few ingredients including peat moss and dolomitic lime.
Key Elements for Great Tomatoes
Sun, acidic soil, water. Yes, it is that simple. Tomatoes love the sun, acidic soil, and water. You will know when to water by checking the solid daily. If the soil is dry about an inch deep (don’t judge by the surface), it’s time to water. Watering may be required daily, but not always so it is best to check the soil moisture level first. Water until you see the water run out from under your container.
Don’t forget to visit your plants daily. You can even talk to them and tell how great they are and how you love watching them grow.
