Today, after a hunt that lasted for almost a month, Jay Slater has been found but, unfortunately, confirmed as dead. Slater was last heard from on June 17 after setting off to walk from a northern area of Tenerife back to his holiday accommodation in the south after attending a concert – a journey of about 11 hours. At 8.30 a.m. of that day, the last call he made was to his friend Lucy Law, telling her his phone battery was on 1%, and he had cut his leg on a cactus. Until his spotting today, no one had heard from him or seen him.

A Spanish court confirmed that fingerprint tests showed that the body is that of 19-year-old Jay Slater. The court also added that his death was caused by “trauma consistent with a fall in a rocky area.” LBT Global, a charity that helps families in missing person cases overseas, said a body was found on Monday with Slater’s clothes and possessions near his last known location in Masca in Tenerife. The court stated that everything suggests that the signs of his death are consistent with an accidental fall but the results of the official investigation into the death would take more time.
Debbie Duncan’s Reaction To The Tragic News
Debbie Duncan, Jay Slater’s mother, has said that her family’s “hearts are broken” after a body found while searching for Slater in Tenerife was confirmed to be his. She said that the confirmation of her son’s death was “the worst news,” she also said: “I just can’t believe this could happen to my beautiful boy. Our hearts are broken.” LBT Global’s Matthew Searle MBE was talking to Miss Duncan when the news that Mr. Slater’s body had been identified started spreading.
Mr. Searle explained to The Independent the family’s state, saying:
“It’s just the worst news they could possibly expect. There’s always that slim hope until confirmation comes that they’ve got it wrong and it’s someone else, but sadly they have’t got it wrong and their worst fears have been realised.”
The Aftermath
Debbie Duncan, 55, is still in Tenerife along with Jay Slater’s father Warren Slater, 47, in addition to one of his friends Brandon Hodgson, 19. Mr. Searle said the family is not currently disclosing when they will be returning home to the UK, nor releasing any funeral details at this time. Mr. Searle is actually helping the family to sort out this tragedy the best way they can.
