Vision Boards: A Useful Tool for Manifestations

Is a vision board a great way to make a change or bring something new into your life? Oftentimes, we need something to help guide us to our desired goal. It can be easy to overlook pursuing goals, whether it be from things like a lack of motivation or someone’s overwhelming day-to-day routine. Daily meditation, yoga stretches, and exercise can help channel our energy, but what about manifesting our end goal? There are scientific and psychological ways to help guide our brains with external audio or visual aids to accomplish our goals. Vision boards are one great way.

What is a Vision Board?

Commonly referred to as a vision board, this tool is often also described as a dream board, goal board, or inspiration board. The “board” serves as a tool used to help keep your brain on track for a specific goal. By definition, a vision board is a collection or collage of images or articles meant to inspire or motivate a specific accomplishment. Does a vision board have to look a certain way?

No, you can tailor yours to your needs. They can be as small as a notebook or as big as a wall. The creator is in complete control of how big, small, simple, or detailed the vision board will be. They don’t even have to be tangible items. They can be clips that people keep on their phones or preferred audio devices so they may listen to their inspirations while working or during other activities. It’s about knowing yourself and what will help motivate you to reach your destination.

To begin, you will need a pen and paper to make a list or diagram of your end goal or desire. This list can include key sentences, phrases, or simply words that align with your goals. Don’t add anything you don’t feel attuned to or in agreement with. This could throw off your whole board.

Images, such as pictures, cutouts, or even drawings, could help you visualize your goal. You could tape, glue, or pin the materials to your board and add decorations if you so please. Doing so will help attract your eye throughout the day, like first thing in the mornings or during the day while you work.

The placement of the board is key. Do you want to see this as you wake up while working or as you are relaxing at the end of your day? All three would be ideal, but this is up to you and what fits best with your daily routine. The trick is to be able to see it when you are making decisions during the day, so your brain keeps your goals on your mind throughout your busy day.

The Science Behind Vision Boards

Proposed by psychologist Albert Bandura, the Self-Efficacy Theory promotes the use of visual depictions of one’s goals to enhance self-efficacy by providing a daily reminder of the goals, aspirations, and natural abilities of the individual. One TD Bank survey found one in five successful entrepreneurs have used or currently use vision boards when starting their business. Of those who use boards, 76% state their progress is aligned with their vision.

By using a vision board, you are activating neural pathways and strengthening those connections in your visual cortex. By stimulating that part of your brain, you are building a stronger connection to building and maintaining your set goals. You must choose visual aids that pertain directly to your vision and keep them somewhere you will see them while making decisions during the day.
