Unplug to Recharge: The Benefits of a Digital Detox

A digital detox from your phone and computer is not only beneficial for your mental health to stop comparing your life to others, but also for your physical well-being. Sitting less, staring at a screen for just a few hours a day, and being out in the sunshine, it will change your fitness, mental health, psychology, and social life.

Unplugging can save your phone–and your body—battery. By being present and active, one can avoid comparisons, anxieties, and bad habits coming from mindless scrolling online.

Some Social Media Stats To Change Mind

Maybe a person doesn’t feel like they are addicted to their phone. Worldwide statistics and figures say otherwise.

The average person receives more than 50 notifications per day. That means more than 50 times, a person is looking down at their phone. A person is looking to see who texted, emailed, or messaged them. Turning off notifications, and getting rid of your phone completely, brings less distraction and more presence.

Plus, 74 percent of phone users between 18 to 34 years old use their smartphone when bored. The “urge” to grab the phone and find something to look at or do shows how short attention spans are in modern life.

Lastly, almost 50 percent of Americans say they couldn’t live without their smartphone. Compared to just 10 years ago, this is a staggeringly high number. People rely on their phones to talk to their friends, chat with family, respond to work emails, and be available 24/7.

Undertaking a digital detox can impact a person’s life in so many ways.

There are proven benefits to taking time away from your screens. Whether for just 24 hours or an entire week, a person will experience better mental health, improved sleep, reduced stress levels, less anxiety, and improved social relationships.

Mental Health—When you have more time to focus on what you really enjoy, your mental health will soar. A person will not be worried about comparing your life to anyone else’s on social media or worry why someone isn’t texting or calling you. Being present and in the moment gives you more time to do the things that you enjoy without worrying.

Improved Sleep—Turning off screens at night prevents unwanted blue light from keeping you awake and disrupting your circadian rhythm. Try to wake up when the sun comes up and wind down when the sun sets. Get into a natural, holistic way of waking up and going to sleep based on when you are tired.

Reduced Stress Levels—Constantly worrying about who can contact you, who you have to get back to, and responding right away to a message or email can be worrying. Doing a digital detox means taking a break and focusing on the now.

Steps for a Digital Detox

Keep these things in mind when doing a digital detox:

  • Plan—Plan how often you will use your phone, the limit on your screen time, or how long you will go on the digital detox.
  • Set goals—Set goals (ex: time frame, hours per day, etc.) and stick to them.
  • Tell your close social circle—Tell family and friends about the digital detox. It helps to be more accountable. You could inspire others to do it.
  • See the results—There will be satisfaction with the results. Even if this means using your phone less per day or putting it away one day per week, the chance will be great for your life.
