Vegan In the South: Overcoming the Obstacles

Are you vegan or thinking about becoming vegan? Are you from the south or moving there? If so, you may need some tips on how to succeed in being a vegan in an area where this type of diet and lifestyle isn’t common.  It’s important to have a plan and take the necessary steps to execute that plan. Let’s talk about some ways you can do this.

Commit to Vegan and Nothing Else

Veganism is the practice of not using animal products in your life.  This is mostly true in your diet.  If you love traditional southern foods, this might initially seem like a daunting task. First, you should ask yourself why you have chosen this path to become a vegan.  Did you choose it for health reasons?  Or, maybe you chose it because you love all of earth’s creatures.  Or perhaps it is both.  Whatever your reason is, it is important to often reflect on it because it will motivate you to stay on this path.

Once you know your reason, you decide to be loyal to yourself.  This leads to more self-control.  You make your new agenda the only path to take. You must understand temptation and deny your old pleasures in order to accomplish your new goal. Total commitment is the first step.

Plan Your Vegan Steps

If you have never done this before, it is important to plan your meals.  You need to know what type of vegan foods you want in your diet.  Perhaps you want the traditional vegan food that has no processed ingredients.  This can be a lot cheaper than buying the latest plant burger or plant chicken patty.  Or, perhaps you want a diet that resembles an omnivore lifestyle. Almost everything can be revamped to closely relate it with the correct vegan substitutes. Do you want a raw vegan diet?  This can be very fun if you are creative and open.

It is best to plan your meals a week in advance and make a grocery list. Putting your ideas on a calendar or journal will also help.  When you do this, it gives you more time to prepare.  You will then go to the store knowing exactly what you need.  Once you have gone grocery shopping, you should prepare your meals the night before, or if possible, prepare enough food for the whole week.  To give you some ideas, there are meatless proteins, dairy-free cheeses, and gravy mixes that have no animal products in them.

Get Up and Go Vegan!

Wake up every day and be a vegan.  Stick to your eating schedule.  If you do not deviate, you will likely see the benefits faster from the lifestyle change. Search for vegan restaurants in your area.  In a lot of restaurants, you can put together different side dishes to create a vegan meal.  Applebee’s, TGIF, and Burger King all have plant-based options.

Preparing a good meal can be simple. Choose a carbohydrate and a vegan protein if available, and a salad. Most of the time, you should add some vegetables to your meal as well.  Eat before you go out with others with others. You can have the time of your life knowing that the center of the interactions aren’t all about food.  So that is a plus!

Your diet is only part of this new lifestyle.  No longer wearing leather, snake skins, or wool will be acceptable. It is great to know that your actions aren’t involving cruelty to another animal. Being vegan, you can walk around with a badge of honor knowing you consciously decided to love yourself and the rest of the world. Down south, it can be hard being a vegan because it is not as popular there as it is on the east and west coasts.  You have to decide to be a leader and know how to stand alone. It all comes down to committing to your own goals, making a smart plan, and executing being a vegan!
