Tadpole Water: Behind Gen Z’s New Weight Loss Trend

Tadpole Water: Behind Gen Z's New Weight Loss Trend; Chia seeds

“Tadpole water” is the latest obsession, all thanks to Gen Z who have made it a trend on TikTok. The drink is a simple combination of water, chia seeds, and freshly squeezed lemon juice. Its weird name comes from the way the chia seeds appear slimy after soaking, which resemble tiny tadpoles in a pond.

Gen Z has shared two ways of preparing chia seed water, claiming that it helps shed weight fast and easily. Several TikTok celebrities have also jumped on the trend, praising the drink for its supposed benefits. Let’s dive into the various ways of preparing the trending water and also answer the burning question: is the Gen Z tadpole water trend evidence-based? If yes, does it have benefits?

  1. Add water to a glass.
  2. Add 1 or 2 tablespoons of chia seeds.
  3. Leave overnight in the fridge.
  4. Squeeze a fresh lemon, stir and enjoy.

Method 2

  1. Add water to a glass.
  2. Add 1 or 2 tablespoons of chia seeds.
  3. Leave them to soak for 30 mins.
  4. Squeeze a fresh lemon, stir and enjoy.

The Benefits Are Not Evidence-Based

As of August 2024, there is no known research done on chia seed water; however, there has been some research done on chia seeds. The Journal of Medical and Health Science in 2023 concluded that chia seeds combined with a low-calorie diet caused “significant weight loss” to participants of the experiment. In addition, chia seeds need to be regulated if they are to be used for a prolonged period for they can cause weight gain.

The seeds have the following nutrients; omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, iron, and zinc. Lemon, on the other hand, is known to have vitamin C, detox agents, immune boosting, and alkalizing properties. The combination of chia seeds and lemon is known to potentially aid in weight loss, though there is no scientific proof.

What TikTokers Are Saying About The Trend

Maria Padilla, an 18-year-old TikTok content creator, shared her experience through a video, she said, “I can confirm it does work for weight loss.” She also added that she had lost three pounds in three days (a pound a day) and that its taste was funky. Did she like it? No, but if it helps, she does not mind. Rosita, a lifestyle influencer, shared a post on her page. She said, “Drinking my tadpole water, hoping to get snatched by Thursday.”

A food content creator shared an important rule when taking the chia seeds water. She said, “Health tip of the day, if you don’t put water in your chia seeds before you consume them, your chia seeds will expand in your stomach, causing blockage – meaning you’ll be constipated. And it’s just going to disrupt your digestive system.”

Conclusion

”Tadpole water” is now viral, thanks to Gen Z on TikTok. It is a simple mix of water, chia seeds, and squeezed lemon juice. They believe that the mix is helping them lose weight, and fast. While no research directly supports the claim, studies on chia seeds suggest it can help with weight loss when combined with a low-calorie diet. Therefore, it becomes a personal choice to join the challenge or not!
