The Northern Lights are an incredible phenomenon that everybody would be lucky to see at least once in their lifetime. Their visibility increases greatly the further north you travel in the world, giving places around the Arctic Circle some of the best viewpoints for these dancing lights in the sky. So if you’re thinking of going for a vacation this upcoming winter season, where is the best location to see these streaks of pink, green, and blue light up the midnight sky?
Norway
Norway is one of the top destinations for those who want to embark on a winter adventure. Even though Oslo is the bustling capital city of this Scandinavian country, there is much more to do and see that is nature-centric in the northern part of the country. You can travel around the fjords, go for late hikes, and even go dog sledding in the fresh snow powder.
We recommend going to the Lofoten Islands of Svalbard to see the Northern Lights. You can also rent a cottage or stay in a hotel around North Cape or Kirkenes to see the Northern Lights during your trip. Other little-visited spots that offer more seclusion for your trip include Longyearbyen and Nordkapp.
Sweden
Sweden is another Scandinavian country that is very similar to Norway in terms of geography, outdoor activities, and temperature. Sweden’s main cities are located in the southern parts of the country, like Stockholm, whereas the northern areas are dedicated to hiking, skiing, winter activities, and outdoor-centric things to do.
If you are interested in seeing the Northern Lights during your stay, consider staying in Kiruna, Abisko, or Laponia. Head to the Aurora Sky Station in Abisko between December and March to maximize your chances of seeing this incredible display.
Finland
Another Scandinavian country that is great for viewing the lights is Finland. Compared to Sweden and Norway, Finland is much flatter. The country also offers different outdoor activities than you would find in the previous two, such as going for forest walks, fishing, spending time in the sauna, and swimming in lakes.
We recommend going to Rovaniemi, Ruka, Levi, or Ivalo to see the lights. If you want to go where Santa Claus lives, according to folklore, then Rovaniemi is the top on your list. Even though you might be able to see the lights during your time in the capital city of Helsinki, we recommend going as far north as you can between September and March to maximize your chances.
Scotland
Last but not least, we travel to the United Kingdom to check if we can see the Northern Lights in Scotland. Head to the Orkney Islands, Shetland, or the Isle of Skye to see if you can view the lights in the dark sky. Although Scotland isn’t Arctic by any means, or as far north as Lapland, you can still have a great chance of seeing the lights between October and March on one of the islands.
Final Thoughts: See the Northern Lights This Holiday
If you are interested in seeing the Northern Lights and twinkling stars during your upcoming trip, make sure you choose a destination that is as far north as you can. Head to any of these countries in the winter and early spring to make the most out of your excursion. Don’t forget to bring a camera, either.
