Tarantino stated that Baldwin is not entirely at fault for the shooting that led to the death of crew member Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust. Despite Baldwin being acquitted, the conversation around the incident has yet to fizzle out and some fingers are still pointing at the actor.
Baldwin’s Rust Shooting Scandal
In October 2021, Baldwin was charged with manslaughter after he accidentally pulled the trigger that killed fellow crew member, Halyna Hutchins. The authorities immediately launched an investigation; three months later, they claimed there was a degree of neglect involved in the incident. New Mexico’s Office of the Medical Investigator cited the death as accidental based on the autopsy, but allegedly the prosecutors wanted the actor to be tried by the court. If found guilty, Baldwin would have been locked behind bars.
After months of court appearances, Baldwin was found innocent of the shooting on the Rust set. Instead, the courts found that the armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was largely at fault, and she was sentenced to and served a few months in prison. Following the ruling of Baldwin’s innocence, fans and family were overjoyed. Meanwhile, the actor seems to have gotten his life back together. Despite this progress, some people still think differently about who the real culprit is.
Quentin Tarantino On Alec Baldwin’s Rust Shooting
Quentin Tarantino, the director of multiple timeless films, partly blames Alec Baldwin for the shooting on the ‘Rust’ set. The director examined the shooting scenario during his time with Bill Maher on the Club Random podcast. Tarantino explained that he felt that the armorer holds 90% of the blame, while the actor shares the remaining 10%.He refused to see Baldwin as completely blameless because the actor was supposed to double-check the armor as well. At first, Maher found Tarantino’s opinion unbelievable, but QT emphasized that there is always a process before handling a weapon on set and that Baldwin was supposed to follow the due process and ensure that he raised questions when needed.
Tarantino’s stance on the issue appears to be in contrast with not only the court’s judgment but also with SAG-AFTRA, the body responsible for speaking on behalf of active actors. Back in January, the guild put out a statement that read: “An actor’s job is not to be a firearms or weapons expert. Firearms are provided for use on set under the guidance of multiple expert professionals directly responsible for the safe and accurate operation of that firearm.” They further maintained while every set involving firearms provides rules and regulations on handling, actors don’t concern themselves with safety in its entirety because there are people paid specifically to ensure safety on set.
Irrespective of the different opinions on the Rust shooting, Alec Baldwin has long shown his regret over the untimely death of his co-star. When police came to arrest him, the actor was entirely remorseful, answering questions speedily and repeatedly asking if his co-star was okay. Following the charges levelled against him, though, Baldwin was dedicated to proving his innocence in the case. In an ABC interview, the actor explained that someone was to blame but it was not him.

Quentin Tarantino’s take on the issue may be controversial, but his assertion that everyone should be careful, especially when handling a firearm, is not wrong. The incident still divides public opinion: many believe the firearm expert on set should have paid closer attention, while others fully blame Alec Baldwin for not being careful enough.
