Founder and CEO of the famous instant messaging app Telegram, Pavel Durov, has been arrested at Paris Airport on accounts of ‘Criminal Charges’. The Franco-Russian Billionaire has been taken into custody for further interrogation. Meanwhile, the Magistrate also ordered the extension of his detention to have a proper investigation. This could go up to 96 hours if needed by the authorities. Thereafter, he will be subjected to either custody or let go of all the charges.
The 39-year-old has been linked to some serious offenses. This includes money laundering and drug trafficking to name a few. The ‘Tribunal Judiciare De Paris’ or the ‘Prosecutor of the Republic’ put out a press release earlier in the day, mentioning all the charges made against the billionaire and if found guilty, he could be in for serious trouble. On the other hand, there have been protests against Pavel Durov’s arrest in Moscow (Russia). People were seen throwing ‘Telegram’ letters just outside the vicinity of the French embassy in the capital.
Telegram’s Statement Regarding Pavel Durov’s Charges
The messaging company has put a statement in regards to Pavel Durov’s arrest. It clearly states that the app abides by EU laws, which follows the industry standards and takes care of it regularly. This also includes following the Digital Services Act.
Moreover, the Russian embassy in France has called for action on the matter. A team of diplomats is delicately handling Pavel’s matter and is expecting to solve it at the earliest. Furthermore, the embassy has demanded the rights of the CEO and founder remain intact. While a lot is being done on one end, the French government has been rather quiet on the issue. However, President Macron has assured that no political agenda is behind the arrest. Judiciary will take its course and justice will be served.
Pavel Durov is Accused of 12 Charges
A total of 12 charges have come out against Pavel Durov. While money laundering and drug trafficking are probably the biggest, others like the circulation of minor pornographic content and cryptology also make the case worse. The French authorities have been in search of the Billionaire for some time now and grabbed the chance with both hands when they got it.
The Billionaire has been a frequent flyer to Europe after leaving Russia in 2014. He frequently visits Europe and has a French Citizenship as well. Interestingly, before the arrest, Pavel Dubov was last seen in Azerbaijan, at the same time when Russian President Vladimir Putin was there as well. While these are all rumors, people have linked the two situations together, trying to create some smoke in the air.

After Pavel Durov’s arrest, many stepped out in protest of free speech but obviously, Elon Musk made the most headlines. His sarcastic post of X has created quite a buzz and people can’t stop reacting to it. His post featured an ad, highlighting the First Amendment, which talks about the ‘Freedom of Speech’. Moreover, Musk followed it up with another post describing Europe’s situation in the year 2030, where people are sentenced to prison for liking a meme.
His sarcasm not only highlighted his mild support for the Russian Billionaire but also raised questions about Europe’s situation as a leading continent. Meanwhile, if the charges against Pavel Durov are proven in court, he could face up to 20 years of jail sentence.
