Joshua Zimmerman, a Mississippi inmate, escaped custody on June 14, 2024. He was being held on several charges across three different states. In Mississippi, he was being charged with armed robbery and attempted murder when he escaped from DeSoto County Jail. After escaping, Zimmerman traveled to Chicago and resided there for two months before being captured. He even got a job at a restaurant, where he was ultimately found and taken back into custody. Authorities still do not know how or why Joshua Zimmerman ended up in Chicago.
History of Arrests
Joshua Zimmerman is known for using aliases and falsified identification to go undetected. He has committed crimes in multiple states and has yet to be sentenced for any of them. He is currently wanted by the state of Connecticut. In 2018, he was convicted of possession of a firearm. He was also charged with sexual assault in December 2022 but was let out on bond. He failed to appear at his court hearing because he fled the state. However, in light of recent events, a warrant was sent out for his re-arrest.
On September 2, 2023, Zimmerman was seen checking into a motel with Keyanna Mercer. Witnesses claimed to have heard a fight break out between the two. Next, a gun went off, and Zimmerman was seen leaving the room alone. A warrant was sent out for his arrest. However, by that time, he was already arrested for separate charges in Mississippi. On September 29, 2023, Joshua Zimmerman was arrested for armed robbery and attempted murder in DeSoto County. Originally, he was supposed to be extradited back to Texas for the murder. That no longer became the plan once he escaped police custody.
Escape and Capture
Surveillance footage caught Zimmerman walking out of the Mississippi courthouse on June 14, 2024. He was dressed casually and looked as if he were any other person walking in and out of the building. The authorities did not know how he managed to slip away from the other inmates. Once he made it out of the courthouse, he traveled over 500 miles north to Chicago.
Joshua Zimmerman got a job working at a seafood restaurant, where he was initially spotted. Authorities received a report that he was seen walking into said restaurant on August 20, 2024. They immediately tried to detain him that evening. However, Zimmerman barricaded himself in the ceiling, which led to an overnight standoff. Several law enforcement teams surrounded the area, trying to get him out. He was the only one in the building and was unarmed. Authorities, at the time, stressed that no one else was in danger. Joshua Zimmerman was taken back into custody the following morning.
Final Thoughts
The authorities worked for over 60 days to bring Joshua Zimmerman back into custody. He is currently pending charges. The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office is hoping he can be extradited back to Mississippi. The family of Keyanna Mercer is glad he is back in custody and believes he should remain there. His escape is the subject of an ongoing investigation. On August 26, 2024, they arrested Ronnie Hunt, a former deputy jailer, in connection with Joshua Zimmerman’s escape. They still have not shared any details on how he managed to get out or why the deputy jailer assisted him. Zimmerman is being held in Illinois until authorities can determine which charges he should face first.
