A Mixed-Faith Marriage: Difficult But Not Impossible

Barbra Streisand is celebrating her 26th wedding anniversary with James Brolin. Mixed-faith marriage.

Mixed-faith marriages are complicated, difficult, and sometimes painful, but they don’t have to be impossible. Some individuals might find this process more difficult than others, and this is a highly unique process for each couple. The structure of the faiths is also a huge indicator of the difficulty of the melding of two different ones in holy matrimony. Are mixed-faith relationships doomed to fail? Can two people love each other and look past fundamental differences like faith? We’ll discuss it here!

What Is A Mixed-Faith Marriage?

A mixed-faith marriage is one where the two people married believe in two different faiths. Studies have found that 69% of marriages within the United States are same-faith. The number of mixed-faith marriage has also increased by 20% in 2010 in comparison to 1960. ‘Faith’ in this context is nearly synonymous with religion, but faith can include any belief system that we put out trust and confidence in. That faith can be as abstract as the trust or confidence in nature, the unknown, the universe, or the absence of a higher being. But in this article, the focus will mostly be on typical world religions.

The Impact Of Faith

Some mixed-faith marriages can be more complicated than others because of the structure of an individual’s faith system. For example, many religions may speak out directly against holy matrimony with someone who is not of the same religion. This would obviously strain a marriage.

Some religions also promote the concept of converting others into the faith, and possibly may believe people of other belief systems may meet very unpleasant consequences after death. In that context, a mixed-faith marriage may represent a relationship in which one individual is afraid they’re partner will be punished in the afterlife and not converting them would feel like letting their mate down. This can create anxiety in both people. This will make a relationship far more difficult than couples that are apart of belief systems that operate differently.

Other Factors

This is hardly a all-encompassing list, but these factors can also impact the success or failure of a mixed-faith marriage:

Flexible Thinking: This type of thinking is typically defined as the ability to see things differently, and from multiple angles. Adaptability is also often a component. Obviously, the existence of flexible thinking will make it much easier to have a mixed-faith marriage. This does not mean that you don’t have convictions or beliefs, but you are just able to view things from different angles and are okay if someone in your life doesn’t see things the same way.

Community: If friends and family and other sources of community are open, this will benefit the marriage. If a mixed-faith marriage is met with negativity, this will hurt the couple’s dynamic.

Level Of Commitment: Someone who casually or more relaxedly follows their faith may find a mixed-faith marriage easier. People who are less ‘devout’ may find their identity and value system to be less intertwined with their belief system. In that instance, it would be easier to be with someone from another religion since it is less consequential to them.

Change Of Faith: If someone converts to a new religion or completely uproots their belief system mid-marriage that can make things harder since the couple united under a shared faith. However, if both people enter into the relationship with different belief systems and fall in love with each other that way it will be much easier to accept that difference.

In Conclusion

Mixed-faith relationships can be complicated. This author is in a long-term mixed-religion partnership and it is easy as pie, but they have seen other instances in which it isn’t. The type of belief system, along with other factors like a person’s flexible thinking, level of commitment to their faith, duration of faith, and the attitude of the couple’s community will determine the success of a mixed-faith marriage. Anything is possible, and each marriage is unique to the two people in it. Only they can decide if their mixed-faith marriage will work or not.
