With all the activity surrounding the Trump presidency, it is easy to lose track of what is actually happening and who the respective players are. The sounds emanating from the Trump administration are strange and foreign to most ears. From the sound of Elon’s chainsaw to the beratment that President Zelensky of Ukraine suffered at the hands of Trump and his boy Robin. Not to mention the muteness of the president’s cabinet when Elon and Donald told them when to speak and for how long. This administration is a barrel full of fun.
To help you make sense of all this, I will review Trump and his henchmen’s activities for the week and choose three of the biggest nightmares. And remember, what I am presenting to you each week is merely the tip of the Trump iceberg.
Children with Disabilities in Trump Trouble
Caught up in Trump’s manical goal of eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion programs (DEI) from federal government agencies, one of these initiatives aimed at the Education Department will diminish opportunities for students with disabilities to receive an equitable education in our public schools.
The program caught in the president’s crosshairs analyzes programs for these students with disabilities to best accommodate these children’s needs and reserves their right to be in an inclusive classroom.
The Worm Continues to Eat RFK Jr’s Brain
Speaking about the measles outbreak in West Texas and New Mexico, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK) cautioned that while his department was monitoring the situation, the outbreak is not unusual. Most experts disagree with Kennedy ( a noted vaccine critic) proclaiming that the U.S. had not experienced a measles death since 2015. There has already been one death during this cycle of an unvaccinated school-aged child.
In fact, in 20o0, 29 years after the U.S. implemented a two-dose vaccine schedule, measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). This outbreak started in a largely unvaccinated rural community. The Mennonite community, although not having religious prohibitions against vaccinations, fell prey to anti-vaccine activist groups who persuaded them that the vaccines were unnecessary and, in some cases, could be harmful.
Tryin’ to Reason with Hurricaine Season
Over a dozen senior staffers have been fired or resigned from the Federal Emergency Mangement Agency (FEMA) just weeks before hurricane season. This was prompted by the dismissal of 1,000 of the agency’s 17,000 employees as part of the Musk/Trump federal employee purge. Prior to all of this, Trump had mentioned dismantling the entire agency and shifting emergency preparedness and response functions to the states.
This was all while the agency was already dealing with staff shortages and was taxed thin by the succession of storms and wildfires over the past several months. According to Shana Udvardy, senior climate resilience policy analyst at the Union of Concerned Scientists.
โThe massive reduction in staff at FEMA will have dangerous ripple effects for communities across the country. At a time when FEMA staff is low capacity, this is going in the wrong direction.โ
