Happy Meal Toys Of Yesteryear: Tarzan Treehouse

Happy Meal toys have been around for ages, and there are many classic sets. Many of them revolve around Disney movies. The 1990s were a Disney renaissance, with the company churning out hit after hit. Disney ended the decade with the 1999 release of Tarzan. McDonald’s had one of the most unique sets of Happy Meal toys to celebrate the release, the Tarzan Treehouse.

Happy Meal Toys: The Tarzan Treehouse

For most sets of Happy Meal toys, the complete collection didn’t get you anything besides a complete set. This was not the case with the Tarzan Treehouse. While each toy did something on its own, if you were able to complete the set, you were able to make a full treehouse. Each toy fits with the other and, when combined, is a fun snapshot of every character in the movie. This set had eight pieces to it: Tarzan, Sabor, Tantor, Young Tarzan, Terk, Jane, Karchak, and Kala & Baby Tarzan.

Each character did something special. Tarzan swung from the trees. Sabor the Leopard pounced out of his hiding spot. Terk tumbled out of his perch. Once you set off one toy, the others would follow suit. Individually, these toys were fun, but the whole set was a collector’s dream.

Happy Meal Toys: Others That Combine Together

This was a tactic McDonald’s applied every so often to its Happy Meal toys. It is a slightly risky venture. On the one hand, you encourage the customers to come back on a weekly basis to try and score one of the toys they do not have. However, for the customer who is not going to visit the Golden Arches eight times in two months, the toys can be seen as a bit of a letdown.

The most recent example of the company doing this was with the release of Toy Story 4. Each character had its own toy, but if you collected them all, you could build an RV. It was a cool concept, and many people scrambled to find all of the characters from the classic franchise. It was cool but nowhere near the Tarzan Treehouse. In all the collecting I’ve done with Happy Meal toys, nothing comes close to this set.
