Ariana Grande stuck her foot firmly in her mouth with recent ‘sick’ comments related to one of America’s most notorious serial killers. It wasn’t even a comment so much as a retelling of a story that included said comments in the conversation. Most of us are grateful that we’re not famous because our mouths would probably get us into trouble even more often than Ms. Ariana. That being said, words have power, and Grande used hers to hurt people, even if it was unintentional, with her problematic comments.
Ariana Grande’s ‘Sick’ Comments

On ‘Podcrushed‘, a podcast designed for guests to go over teenage memories, both good and bad, Ariana Grande did so. She admitted that one time when a ‘young’ fan asked her if she could have dinner with anyone living or not, who would it be? Grande told her she would pick Jeffrey Dahmer because he was ‘fascinating’ and she has questions for him.
In addition to being awkward and out of place because the fan was reportedly quite young, it’s also insensitive to choose a serial killer as your dinner guest. However, Ariana Grande was in her early 20s, and although this was not a wise comment, it was coming from a place of youth and immaturity and not malice. Cut the lady some slack!
Families Speak Out
Understandably, the family of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims, Anthony ‘Tony’ Hughes, is cutting Ariana Grande no slack. Tony Hughes was the deaf victim of Dahmer, as many people may remember from the series ‘Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’, who may or may not have been in a relationship of sorts with the serial killer. Hughes’ mother, Shirley, says the portrayal of their dynamics was not as it was depicted on the show, but some of his friends have contradicting stories. The truth will likely never be known.
We will never truly know, and it’s understandable that some people are more sensitive to talks of victims of serial killers as well as the criminals themselves. Ms. Shirley as well as her daughter, Ms. Barbara, are not happy with Ariana Grande’s answer to the dinner question. They would appreciate an apology from Ariana Grande and would like the singer to make it clear that killers should not be glamorized.
Ms. Shirley expressed what she felt about the pop singer, saying: “To me, it seems like she’s sick in her mind. It’s not fancy or funny to say you would have wanted to do dinner with him. It’s also not something you should say to young people, which she says she did.” While diagnosing people’s mental health with limited information as a non-professional is not advised, it is definitely clear that this comment was inappropriate for a young audience.
What A Dinner
To be clear, a dinner with a serial killer would not be ideal. In many prisons, the most you can do eating-wise with your loved one is share crappy vending machine snacks at a table in the visitation room. If you were somehow able to get some type of ‘Mindhunters‘ type access to serial killers and break bread in an interview room, you would be sitting across the table from a chained-up murderer in a locked room with a bored security guard in the corner. I hope you like common prison food like hotdogs and fish patties, Ariana Grande. Taking in your own food is highly unlikely.
No one, especially Ariana Grande, wants to take a serial killer out of prison for dinner. These individuals are cold, calculating, violent, and lack any type of empathy. No one is safe in a public place when a serial killer is in it who’s trying to get free. One way to bring in outside food would be eating a last meal with a serial killer, but death row is not a place you want to eat dinner in. Especially if the criminal requests a single olive, like Victor Feguer. Bon Appétit!
