Beanie Babies are one of the most famous failed fads in history. When the plush characters were released, collectors scrambled to nab every character, protect the tags, and keep them in pristine condition. The market on them crashed. Most of the plush toys are completely worthless. However, there are some that still retain value and can be sold for big money.
Beanie Babies: Peace The Bear
Peace the Bear is unique for several reasons. He is a tye-dye bear, which means that no two are the same. For collectors, this is incredibly desirable. One of one things tend to retain value no matter the collection. The design isn’t the only reason this one can be valuable. It was the first of the Beanie Babies to have an embroidered emblem on the chest. If you have one of these in your collection, it is one of the few that actually has value.
Original Nine Beanie Babies: Peanut The Elephant
The original nine are more collectible due to them being the first run. However, there is one of the original Beanie Babies who is above the rest. Peanut the Elephant can be valuable for one reason: its color. The original release had him donning royal blue. That color only lasted a year before being changed to baby blue. This makes the royal blue version of Peanut incredibly valuable.
Patti The Platypus
This is another one that is valuable because of the character’s color. Patti the Platypus was only on shelves from 1993-1998 and came in four different colors throughout her lifetime: magenta, fuchsia, maroon, and raspberry. The magenta color was the original, making it the most valuable of the bunch. She was a crowd favorite, so many collectors wanted her no matter the color.
Iggy The Iguana Error
Many of the Beanie Babies that are collectible have some errors. Whether it is a misprint on the tag or a name change, those errors increase the value. This is one of the more egregious errors in production. Iggy was a dark blue, but in his first run, the production company confused his color with Rainbow the Chameleon. This meant that there was a limited run of Iggy’s that were tye dye. Those sell for big money.
Princess Diana Bear, But Not All Of Them
This is the most complicated of the valuable Beanie Babies. In 1997, Ty released a special Princess Diana bear to honor the tragic passing of a member of the British royal family. The key to the value of this bear is what is on the inside. There are two types of pellets on the inside of these bears: PVC pellets and PE pellets. The PVC pellets are the ones that are valuable. Those can often fetch five figures.
Not many Beanie Babies are valuable, but there are some. If you have some lying around, check to make sure you aren’t sitting on a gold mine.
