BMW Recalls 720,000 Vehicles as Faulty Water Pumps Pose Fire Danger

On August 13, 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a report stating that BMW was recalling 720,796 vehicles due to a faulty water pump that could lead to a fire hazard. The recall, put under NHTSA number 24V-608, affects several BMW models manufactured between 2012 and 2018. Unfortunately, this is the third recall for BMW since July. Other companies affected by recalls include Ford and Mazda, which recently issued a ‘Do Not Drive’ warning for over 457,000 vehicles due to faulty Takata airbags.

The Cause of BMW’s 720,000 Vehicle Recall

The NHTSA website shared that the cause of the recall was “an improperly sealed electrical connector on the water pump may be exposed to water and short circuit.” In March 2024, the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MoLIT) contacted BMW about a thermal event involving one of their vehicles. Upon receiving the report, they immediately initiated an investigation and discovered one incident in the US market in January.

Upon further investigation, the company discovered that in certain rare conditions, blow-by fluid dripping from the intake air hose could compromise the sealing of the electric plug connector. As of August 2024, BMW said they were aware of 18 US customer complaints that may relate to the water pump. Their dealers received a notification of the recall on August 13, 2024, while the vehicle owners will get a First Class mail notification on October 4, 2024, to have the repair done at no cost.

Once the cars arrive at the dealers, the dealers will perform an inspection on the water pumps and plug connectors. If necessary, they will replace them. Additionally, they will install a shield to divert any fluid from the intake air hose of the positive crankcase ventilation system. In addition, those who have already repaired will receive reimbursement under the BMW Group’s reimbursement plan.

BMW’s Other Recalls in July

On July 24, the German company recalled over 290,000 vehicles in North America because of faulty bolts that could cause the interior cargo rail to detach in case of a rear crash. Before that, on July 10, they also recalled 394,000 vehicles still in North America due to Takata-made airbag inflators that could explode during deployment. As a result, sharp metal fragments could injure drivers and passengers.

Ford and Mazda Recall 457,000 Vehicles Over Takata Airbags

On August 13, Ford Motor Co. and Mazda North American Operations issued urgent “Do Not Drive” warnings for over 457,000 vehicles installed with Takata airbags. The warnings were for Ford and Mazda vehicles with non-desiccated Takata airbags. Ford recalled 374,290 vehicles that were manufactured between the years 2004-2014, while Mazda recalled 82,893 cars from 2003 to 2015. The NHTSA urged owners to check for open recalls, especially for those with older vehicles, for they were at a higher risk. Both companies offered free repairs, towing, mobile repairs, and even loaned cars if needed.

Conclusion

The recent recall of 720,796 BMW vehicles emphasizes the importance of promptly addressing safety concerns. As the third recall of BMW since July, it shows the recurrent challenges in the automotive industry. With other manufacturers like Ford and Mazda also issuing recalls, it’s clear that NHTSA’s priority is safety for vehicle users. For the vehicle owners affected by the BMW recall, they should be alert and wait for the mail notification so that they can take action in a bid to safeguard themselves and their loved ones.
