Cancer Rates Are Rising Among Millennials, Gen Z

chronic pain, cancer Gen Z Millennials

Millennials and Gen Z are more prone to cancer as they age compared to previous generations. But is it a lifestyle alteration or something that they can’t control? Fortunately for the younger generation, there are a few things to do to prevent the prevalence of cancer and the rise in diagnosis rates.

Higher Cancer Rates in the Younger Generation

Studies have shown that cancer rates and trends in the United States have increased by nearly 3x for individuals born after 1990 compared to those born in the 1950s. This trend shows the urgent need for cancer prevention strategies and lifestyle changes that can help mitigate the underlying causes.

The American Cancer Society has stated that the cancer rate for younger generations has increased in more than half of the types of cancers, including high-mortality diseases like breast and pancreatic. Despite the death rate declining for other types of cancers due to better treatment modalities and a better prognosis, including colon and gallbladder cancers, the increase in the prevalence of diagnoses is a worrying concern for the younger generation.

This indicates an overall lifestyle and societal change must take place in order to reduce the risk of developing this disease at a young age. Some of the aspects that individuals could change to lessen the chance of developing cancer throughout their lifetime include making small changes to their lifestyle and diet. Of course, some aspects, like genetics, can’t be altered.

Cancer Prevention Strategies

Although it can be hard to determine whether you are at a high risk or not, there are a few prevention methods you can use to help reduce your risk. By controlling the controllable, you can live a healthy and well-rounded lifestyle that will make you feel better and reduce the chance of any type of health-related disease.

Firstly, incorporate a healthy diet and exercise to maintain a healthy weight. A healthy BMI, low body fat percentage, and lean muscle mass all help with weight management, easier mobility, and a lower risk of obesity-related issues like diabetes.

Secondly, exercising regularly not only boosts your metabolism, increases your mood, and strengthens your muscle mass, but it helps you maintain a healthy weight and establishes a well-balanced lifestyle. Fitting in 30-60 minutes of exercise per day, whether that is weight lifting or walking, is a good way to improve your mental and physical well being.

Cut Back On Bad Habits

Next, millennials and Gen Z individuals should cut back on smoking or vaping. Although cigarettes might not be as popular as they were in past generations, vaping has taken the world by storm. Tobacco can cause many types of cancer, serious health problems, and lung issues.

Another way to help lessen the risk is to limit your alcohol intake or go for periods without any alcohol intake. Drinking alcohol increases the likelihood of developing up to six different types of cancer. Those who consume ½ or one drink per day have a much higher likelihood of developing colon or breast cancer.

Lastly, use safe sun protection practices. The best ways to prevent melanoma are to use an SPF, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure during peak periods of the day. Avoid tanning beds, stay out of direct sunlight, and use an SPF moisturizer on your face.
