Country singer Conner Smith was identified as the pickup truck driver who fatally struck a pedestrian last Sunday. The country crooner is well-known for his TikTok song, “I Hate Alabama.” Conner Smith, 24, was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and traveling north on 3rd Avenue North in Nashville. A 77-year-old woman was apparently in a marked crosswalk when she was struck.
Conner Smith Struck a Woman in Nashville
On June 9, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department released a report that Conner Smith struck a woman, identified as Dorothy Dobbins, while traveling on 3rd Avenue North. The local woman, apparently in a crosswalk, was struck at 7:30 PM and taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The accident date, June 8, coincided with the final day of the annual CMA Fest in Nashville.
According to the report, “The preliminary contributing factor for this crash appears to be Smith failing to yield the right of way to the pedestrian. He showed no signs of impairment. There are no charges at present as the investigation continues.” On the accident date, the singer shared photos on Instagram of him performing, with Nashville as the geolocation, and the words, “Hometown hits different.”
An Accident Statement
The “Orange and White” singer’s attorney shared a statement with PEOPLE that he was involved in a “car accident that tragically claimed a life.” It continued, “His heart goes out to Ms. Dobbins’ family during this incredibly difficult time. Mr. Smith continues to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.” Sources indicate the incident was an accident. Smith was not distracted by his phone or under the influence. No charges have been filed at this time.
Rise to Fame
Conner Smith became famous in 2021 with “I Hate Alabama.” Since 2019, the singer has been signed to Big Machine Records’ Valory label. The Nashville native soon thereafter released his debut album, “Didn’t Go Too Far.”
The country star also opened for Luke Bryan on tour. He was nominated for New Male Artist of the Year at the ACM Awards in 2024. He has been married to surfer Leah Thompson since April 2024. Conner Smith is now on tour and scheduled for performances nationwide this summer.
