The first step to any good makeup routine is gathering all the supplies you’ll need. To do a cut crease look, you’ll need the eyeshadow colors of your choice, a concealer that’s lighter than your skin tone, and black or dark-colored eyeliner. A good primer is optional but will aid in making your look last longer. You will also need a fluffy eyeshadow brush, a crease eyeshadow brush, and a flat concealer brush. Remember, makeup is an art. If you don’t have all of these items, using what you have on hand is totally fine! This is your time to shine.
Before you get started on your eyes, the first thing to do is prep the rest of your face. If you like to do your foundation and contour first, get those out of the way. That way, you have a clear view of what your full face will look like once your cut crease look is finished. If you like to do your eyeshadow before the rest of your face, make sure your skin is clean and moisturized. The secret to long-lasting eyeshadow is always primer. Applying a translucent or tinted primer before you start adding eyeshadow will give you a smooth, even surface to work on and keep your look locked in for hours.
Setting The Eyeshadow Base
Pick up the color you want to use for the top of your eye first. This typically shouldn’t be the darkest color of shadow, but a shade somewhere in the middle. It could be a dramatic, bold color, or a more neutral tone. Use your fluffy brush to apply this to the upper part of your lids. The color doesn’t need to fill your lids because you’ll just be covering them with concealer later. Focus on getting that pigment on the top of your eyelid, extending as far up your brow bone as you like. If you accidentally touch your brows, that’s okay. It can always be cleaned up afterward or filled in with another color.
The next thing to do is to go in with your crease brush and apply the darker color of eyeshadow in the crease of your eyelids. This is called the transition shade. Once again, there is no need to extend this lower, as we’ll cut this later with concealer. Just make sure to get a nice pop of that darker color in there. You can bring the transition shade out to the sides of your lids for an extra dramatic look if you like. It’s all about what you’re comfortable with. Continue with your crease brush to blend the two colors where they meet.
Now For The Real Test
Next up is using your concealer to get that iconic cut crease look. This is widely considered the most difficult part of the makeup look, but we’re here to make it as easy as possible for anyone to learn. Dot some concealer on the back of your hand using the brush that your product includes. It’s not a good idea to use the provided brush directly on your eyes as it can apply too much of the product right away. Dip your flat concealer brush into the dollop on your hand and get ready to cut your crease.
Trace the crease of your eyelid (the natural fold in your eye) with the edge of your concealer brush. Follow the natural hemisphere of your eyelids from the inner to the outer corner of each eye. Once you have a good guiding line, fill the rest of the eyelid below with concealer. If you’ve used a primer, this might already look smooth. However, you can go in with another brush or a beauty blender to even out the concealer. You should now see a clear line through the two base colors you put down on your eye, giving a clean, striking look.
Take your fluffy brush again in a light, shimmery shade of eyeshadow. Apply it starting from the inner corner of the concealer base and work toward the middle. Be careful not to blend this over the crease. Remember, the concealer is your line guide.

Finally, you’ll need your darkest shade of eyeshadow and that trusty fluffy brush again. Starting in the outer corner of each eye, pack on the dark color and gently blend it into the center shimmery color. Don’t extend the dark color too far into the middle of the eye. This part is meant to accentuate those clean lines, not cover them. The last step is to add your favorite dark eyeliner to your lash line however you like and apply mascara.
For a really dramatic look, you can try neon colors and a striking cat wing. To keep it subtle, natural nude shades and a thin line around the eyes will do just fine. Don’t be afraid to get out there with your newfound skills and give it a try!
