Coping with Depression: Tips and Resources for Daily Life

Depression, Mental Health Destigmatization

Living with depression can be challenging in certain parts of your life. Of course, there will still be ups and downs, as is normal, but chronic depression can be tiring, stressful, and anxiety-inducing. There might be times when you don’t want to leave your house and times when you don’t want to see anybody in your social circle.

Even though it can seem like there is no cure and that depression will be there forever, there are some tips and resources that you can take full advantage of, which will help you live life to the fullest. Although it can be hard to go outside of your comfort zone, try new things, and branch out to seek professional help, it can be exactly what is needed to help restore the natural balance of your life.

Try Some Exercise

Everybody says this when it comes to feeling down or depressed: Exercise is the key to inducing endorphins and feeling better about yourself, your body, and your daily schedule. Exercise is a great way to increase your mood-boosting hormones, reduce symptoms of depression, increase energy levels, and possibly prevent future depressive episodes.

Today is Temporary

This is the case with almost everything in life – it is just temporary. Even though something that happens today, or an emotion you are feeling at present, can feel like it will last forever, it won’t. You will be able to wake up another day and have a new outlook on life, which can help you remember that just because today was a ‘bad’ day, it doesn’t mean tomorrow has to be.

See the Whole Picture

Identifying individual attributes and analyzing details of a problem, occurrence, or feeling can make it appear as if everything is negative. But, by seeing the whole picture and understanding how these difficult emotions are not a summation of your entire life, you will be able to compartmentalize. Was everything today bad, or was just one instance ruining your mood? Try and recognize the good, identify one meaningful thing that happened that day, or an interaction that was positive.

Set Goals

Another way to help stay on track, remain focused, and keep yourself in a positive mind frame that is productive includes setting goals. Writing down small goals that are measurable and attainable can help you understand what you need to do to move forward. By ticking goals off the list, you will improve your self confidence and have a better sense of accomplishment. Even if they are small goals, like showering or emptying the trash bins, you will be able to do positive things in your life.

Reward Yourself

If you aren’t feeling well, it can feel like you shouldn’t have anything good in life. However, once you accomplish a goal or you are feeling better one day, it is time to treat yourself. Reward your efforts by trying positive self-talk, hanging out with a friend, going to a local cafe to buy a coffee and read a book, or telling a friend about your accomplishments.

Stick to a Routine

Last but not least, having a routine is a great way to get out of a ‘funk.’ Even though depression, or chronic depression, is long-lasting and pervasive, that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a daily routine that helps you feel good about yourself, get closer to your goals, and feel like you’re getting a lot done. Going to work, seeing friends, heading to the gym, or going for a morning walk can help you realize that you have a lot to live for.
