5 Best Reasons to Ease Into Exercise Programs

Exercise is a pivotal part of living a healthy lifestyle, as a matter of fact, the American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderately intense movement per week. While not all exercise programs are made for everyone there’s sure to be one to fit your needs. That doesn’t mean you should just jump right into the program full force from day one.

It’s important to ease yourself into any new exercise regimen. In this short guide, I’ll go over the top 5 reasons why it’s in your best interest to take it slow.

5. Staying Motivated

It’s really easy to lose the motivation to stick to your goals. Jumping into a new exercise program head-first makes it even easier to lose that motivation. So starting slow and working up to your goals is a great way to keep your head in the game and keep you from giving up.

4. Building A Habit

By starting out slow and working up to a full exercise program, you begin to make that routine a habit. So it seems less like work and more like a part of your lifestyle. Once you make it a habit, you won’t need as much motivation to keep going.

3. Sustainable Results

Some studies have shown that starting out slow can actually help you sustain the results from your workouts further down the road. For example, if one of your goals for an exercise program is to lose weight, you’re less likely to hit a plateau where you’re losing little to no weight.

2. Assess Yourself

Another great reason to start out slow is so that you can assess yourself and your fitness level. It’s important to know your limits when working out. As you increase the amount of exercise you’re doing, you can gauge how much you’re improving as well.

1. Prevent Injuries

Number one on the list is preventing injuries. When you first start an exercise routine, your body isn’t used to the movements you’ll be performing. If you push yourself to do those movements anyway, you can cause sprains, torn muscles, fractures, and other injuries.

More About Easing Into An Exercise Program

As you can see, starting off slow is the best way to build a solid foundation for your fitness goals. But before starting any new exercise program, you should always consult with your doctor or other healthcare provider to ensure it’s safe for you and meets your individual needs.

While exercising be sure to pay attention to your body so you don’t exert yourself too much. It’s also important to remember that while you’re easing yourself into your new routine if you feel like something isn’t going to work out for you in the long term, it’s okay to change up that part of the routine.
