On Sat., May 11th, at Nixon Beach, Florida, 15-year-old Ella Adler was struck by a boat after falling into the water while water-skiing. Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Conservative (FWC) asked for public assistance to find a light-blue vessel with 2-4 whiteboard engines and dark blue paint, originally offering $5,000 that soon increased to $20,000.
The “boat of interest” would soon be found in Hammock Oaks in the Coral Gables waterfront neighborhood behind the home of Carlos and Magaly Alonso on Tues. May 14th. According to FWC, this boat belongs to one of the Alonso children, who agreed to cooperate in the investigation.
A Dear Granddaughter, Daughter, and Friend
Ella Adler was a Ransom Everglade freshman who performed ballet for Miami City Ballet. She was an active member of Florida’s Jewish community following in her grandfather’s footsteps, Michael Adler, former president of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, vice chair of Florida International University Board of Trustees, and current U.S. Ambassador of Belgium.
Ella’s family began her shiva, a Jewish funeral tradition to mourn seven days, on Mon. May 13th at Temple Beth Sholom in Miami Beach. Family friend Lorean Pearson, whose daughter boarded the boat with Ella’s friends Saturday, said:
“It was a tremendous loss. She had a bright future. […] A great dancer. My daughter’s best friend. Happy, friendly, always a smile.”
Her principal, Rachel Rodriguez, shared her condolences:
“Our hearts are broken and our community has been devastated by this tragedy. Ella shined in our classrooms and on our stages, and she embodied the mission of Ransom Everglade School. She was an outstanding, student, a wonderful dancer, and an active member of the Jewish Student Association speech and debate team.
We extend our deepest sympathy to her family and our prayers with all who are mourning for her loss.”
First Lady Dr. Jill Biden has been friends with the Adlers for 40 years. She attended the shiva, as confirmed by her attorney, with her motorcade escort.
The Boating Accident at Nixon Beach
Ella Adler was out celebrating a friend’s birthday on Sat. May 11th at Nixon Beach, located near Biscayne Bay. She was water-skiing until she fell off the boat. At 4:30 PM, the “boat of interest” struck the 15-year-old at full speed, dragging her across the water.
She later died on the same day before Mother’s Day due to fatal injuries. The FWC and Ella’s family offered a total of $15,000 dollars for anyone who witnessed the boat that killed Ella Adler. According to Ella’s friends, the “boat of interest” did not stop when the accident occurred.
An eyewitness later submitted video evidence that matched the FWC’s boat description. The “boat of interest” was heading west of the beach.
The “boat of interest” was found in Hammock Oaks on Tues. May 14th. It was parked at the Gables waterfront neighborhood behind the home of Carlos and Magaly Alonso. According to FWC, this boat belongs to one of the Alonso children who agreed to cooperate in the investigation and have taken it into custody.
Investigators are still unsure whether the boat struck Ella by accident or if the owner had ill intent to murder the 15-year-old. Ella Adler will be deeply missed, and the Miami City Ballet is gathering donations in her honor. For more information on where these donations will go, visit their website here.
