How To Create Your Child’s Homeschool Nook In Your Home

Parenting Family Mother Kid

The outside world is becoming scarier, and programs to homeschool children are becoming ideal. The best part about homeschooling? You, the parent, and the kids get to control the learning environment, and what better than a cozy corner for learning? Depending on your state, the needs or requirements to homeschool kids may differ, but most of the supplies stay the same. They include a computer for online programs, writing material, a place to sit and write while doing classwork on the computer, etc.

Requirements For Homeschooling

For homeschool programs in the US, each state has varying homeschool laws, including school-required ages, notification, teaching qualifications, state-mandated subjects, assessment requirements, and immunization requirements. Depending on where you live, you are to follow the homeschool laws of the state you live in.

For those living in other countries, the laws may be different as some could have highly regulated programs while others have outlawed homeschooling. It’s best to check your host country’s programs and laws, even if you’re technically studying abroad.

Homeschooling Supplies

A lot of supplies are needed to accomplish learning strictly at home. Technology is strictly required, so that the student can use the online programs for assignments and to prove to the state or country that they are making progress. It’s a highly regulated learning system, and not at all a cheap decision.

Supplies also depend on the student; some may need a lot to stay organized and to work, while others may require very little and/or would rather avoid getting too many supplies. They could perhaps get distracted so a minimalist design could be effective. Be sure that your child expresses the type of style they prefer as you figure out the design for their learning corner.

The example list of school supplies necessary for homeschooling is as follows:

  • A planner, to keep track of assignments, activities, lesson plans, and schedules.
  • A binder to contain, organize, and hold all the reading and writing material, and separate the completed work papers from the unfinished ones.
  • Books!
  • Office supplies such as staplers, paper clips, highlighters, sticky notes, tape, glue, pens and markers, and rulers of different shapes.
  • A printer to print schoolwork.
  • Devices. Highly recommended ones are a laptop or desktop with headphones, or even a wide, touchscreen device. For those who essentially have a smart home, or a home with many technological devices all around, this can help a lot by making your entire home educationally interactive. Just don’t go overboard with it, or the student may experience the stress of studying, and It may become unproductive.
  • Lastly, these final supplies may not seem necessary, but they are very important for character development. Educational board games and art supplies are great for developing the mind for comprehension that can’t be easily verbalized or pictured without some kind of interpretation, either through games, or art. It’s like a different use or form of literature to describe the feeling of life.

Choosing the Corner

Now that you have more of an understanding of the requirements for homeschooling your kids and the supplies needed for this, it’s time to move on to creating a good environment for them. Aside from gym class, where the students will have to run or exercise, a learning or library corner is cozy, comfortable, least likely to be distractive, and can neatly keep all of your child’s supplies in a specific spot. Marking a specific spot for studying and schoolwork helps with mental organization.

Either the child’s bedroom, a spare room, or a cozy corner in the living room for this setup is ideal. It just requires a bit of space. If possible, make sure it has an outlet or at least a window, allowing for natural light to come in to help the atmosphere, and blinds, so that the student can control how much light they want to allow in by controlling how opened or closed the blinds are. Curtains can’t typically give options for lighting like that. If there is no corner with a window, having a smart home that controls the lights also helps.

Get a low desk; think low, as in you need only crouch to reach and open a drawer or to write on the surface. A regular-height desk will require a regular-height chair, and regardless of what methods you choose for your kid’s homeschool learning, there will be a time when they will have to sit for hours, reading, writing, or be on the computer doing assignments. Get a low desk, ideally, one with drawers if you can, and place it in the corner however you want. Put a bean bag chair there or any other comfortable seat fit for a low table.

Assembling the Supplies

Set up the devices first. Make sure the chosen corner has or is at least within a short distance of plug-in outlets. Plug in the charging cord for the computer set to be used for homeschooling.  Use the other outlet to plug in and put the printer next to the desk or on it, if it doesn’t hinder any writing space for the student. Leave any other outlets as charging slots for the students’ other devices and headphones.

If you’re having difficulty with the technological setup, try and draw inspiration from remote workers and their work desks. Set up a small shelf next to the desk, or multiple shelves that are secured to stick to the wall and not fall, giving the student the feeling of being in a library. The shelves will be the place to put their books, binders, notebooks, and any other supplies or items required for their learning. This is especially helpful if the desk being used doesn’t have any drawers.

Lastly, let the student do this one. Let them look around and choose to add one more detail that will help make it comfortable for them to be willing to stay in that corner to study or work on assignments for as long as they need to. Perhaps a blanket, a pillow, or a stuffie to keep them company. Let them choose the smaller, convenience-oriented supplies. Add a warm mug of whatever drink they prefer and it’s complete. That corner is now their work area and their responsibility (to the extent of their capabilities).

Other Accommodations for Homeschooling

Now you’re probably wondering. “What about the educational board games and the art supplies?” Now, the art supplies can also be a part of their corner. Set up an easel in front of the window or against the wall. It’s not ideal as art can be messy, and board games take up more space than a desk. For these remaining two, they are to be included in the student’s learning, along with the rest of the spaces in the house.

Bond with them and join them along the ride for their learning, either as a teacher or learning alongside them at the dinner table or living room. Help them explore the use of art for expression, show them what each of the tools is for, or learn with them and explore your self-expression as well.

Homeschooling is challenging. It can be just as stressful to take on the roles of teacher and principal for your child as it is to send them to a school with unfamiliar students and teachers, in an environment that you cannot control. Remember, the choice to homeschool your children is based on creating the right environment for them to learn and grow. Wishing you good luck and take care.
