How To Make A Delicious 5-Ingredient Dark Chocolate Hummus Dessert

In this article, I will go over with you how to make dark chocolate hummus. All you need is 5 ingredients and 5 minutes! I love to pair this with strawberries, but if that’s not your thing I’ll share more serving options later. 

I’m super excited to share this with you because not only is this dessert really easy to make but it’s also a healthier option in comparison to other desserts like cake and cookies. 

The 5 Ingredients You’ll Need for Dark Chocolate Hummus

To create a delicious dark chocolate hummus you’ll need these ingredients:

Chickpeas

Chickpeas are the foundation of this dessert. These beans are full of protein and fiber and are a big part of how this hummus gets its creamy texture. You can choose to use dry chickpeas or canned, whatever you have on hand will work! However, I recommend using canned because it’s easier and works just as well. 

Cocoa Powder

The star ingredient of this recipe is the cocoa powder. Not only is it packed with antioxidants, but this is where get your chocolate flavor from. Cocoa powder offers numerous health benefits like lowering blood pressure and improving your mood.

Maple Syrup

To make this sweet without having to deal with a glycemic spike later, you’ll need maple syrup. Its flavor complements the chocolate well while providing a healthier alternative to refined sugars.

Vanilla Extract

Vanilla extract adds some warmth to this recipe. It’s a very potent flavor, so you don’t need much, and pairs with the flavor profile of dark chocolate extremely well.

Almond Milk

To get the perfect consistency we’ll be using almond milk. Its mild flavor complements the other ingredients well without overpowering all of the other flavors.

Preparing the Chickpeas

Begin by draining and rinsing canned chickpeas. This removes any excess sodium and ensures you get a clean flavor base. For a smoother texture, consider removing the skins by gently rubbing the chickpeas between your fingers. It’s time-consuming but worth it, trust me! 

Mixing the Ingredients

In a food processor combine the chickpeas with the cocoa powder, maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Pulse until the mixture is well combined. You can adjust the consistency by gradually adding almond milk until the desired smoothness is achieved.

If you don’t own a food processor, a blender will do just fine. That’s what I use when I make this dessert. 

Tips for Achieving the Perfect Texture

For the best texture, I recommend processing the mixture for a few extra minutes. This will ensure that all ingredients are fully incorporated. If the hummus appears to be too thick, add additional almond milk. This has happened to me before, so I just added a tablespoon at a time, until I reached the desired consistency. 

I would like to stress, do not over-process. This can result in a watery texture.

Adding Flavors and Sweeteners

To get the proper balance of flavors, gradually add the maple syrup. Taste it as you go so you can adjust the sweetness to your preference. Similarly, add vanilla extract in small amounts so you can be sure that you don’t add too much and overpower the chocolate. 

If you’d like you can even add cinnamon, espresso powder, or nut butter to this dark chocolate hummus for a different flavor profile.

Serving Suggestions

Once made, dark chocolate hummus can be enjoyed in various ways:

  • This dark chocolate hummus is commonly paired with fresh fruit, pretzels, or crackers. And for good reason, all of these pairings are amazing! 
  • You can also spread it on toast, pancakes, or waffles for a delicious breakfast.
