When it comes to traveling light and packing to avoid the dreaded ‘overweight’ sign at the airport and skip the additional fees, it can be stressful. You need to bring tons of layers so that you don’t get cold while you are in Europe during the winter season, but you also don’t want to bring bulky coats that weigh 5+ pounds in your check-through bag.
Luckily for you, we have some tips you can follow for your upcoming vacation that help you save money and pack efficiently. After all, traveling for long periods requires a thoughtful packing process that is fashionable, smart, and practical.
Travel Smart: Double-Duty Items
One of the best rules to live by when it comes to packing items for your upcoming trip is to make sure that your clothes or shoes aren’t just for one thing. If you bring shoes, make sure they can be used for city walking, hiking, or relaxing. For pants, make sure they can be used in a versatile way for walking around the city, working out, or going to dinner. T-shirts should be usable for exercise, going out for meals, and relaxing at the end of a long day exploring — having double-use items cuts down on space and reduces the number of ‘pieces’ that you need to bring in your suitcase.
Layering Is Key
Another travel tip that we live by is lying. Picking versatile layers with wicking material is key to being able to wear the same items multiple times, change the outfit with a new layer, and still stay warm or cool enough to adjust to the temperature. For hiking, wearing a wicking and lightweight shirt under a half-zip, and bringing an insulated coat, is a great way to combat the changing temperatures.
Quick-Drying Fabrics
Quick-drying, light, and wicking fabrics are essential during travel. Cotton holds in sweat which means it holds in scents. If you are traveling and don’t have access to a laundry facility every single day, you want clothes that are going to stay smelling fresh for days on end. Wicking fabrics and lightweight material dry quickly, wick away sweat and prevent odor build-up.
Do Laundry
Although the last thing you want to do during your holiday is to find a laundromat or pay more money for an Airbnb with a washing and drying machine, it can be useful to keep your clothes in good condition. Practice washing your clothes in the sink if you don’t have access to a washing machine, coupled with using a drying line or your furniture to lay out your clothes for air drying. Plus, you can also pack a small bar of biodegradable soap to clean your hair, clothes, and dishes.
Multipurpose Footwear
Another crucial tip for packing light for your upcoming travel is to bring multipurpose footwear. There is no point in bringing one pair of fancy shoes if you only wear them one time — this will just take up space, and weight, in your suitcase. Instead, bring sneakers that are nice enough for days in the city, but can function well as all-day walking shoes, exercise shoes, and shoes for long travel days.
Leave the Toiletries
The last trip to consider when trying to pack lightly for your upcoming trip is to leave the toiletries behind. We know that you want to bring your 10-step skincare routine, but all of these bottles and liquids can take up a lot of space and add weight to your bag. And if you try to bring them all in your carry-on bag, you have to fit all of your toiletries into only 3.4 ounces of liquid bottles.
