On the 17th of June, British native Jay Slater got into a car with two men he met during the NRG Music Festival on the coast of Tenerife, Spain. The following day, Jay’s brother, Zak, and his mother, Debbie Duncan were informed by UK Foreign Police that their son had not returned in over 24 hours. Jay Slater last contacted his friend, Lucy Law on a phone call when he was frightened while hiking the mountain trail of Rural de Teno. The best course of action they offered was for Slater’s family to fly and conduct a search to find him.
Duncan travels to Tenerife and cooperates with the Spanish Guardia Civil searching endlessly. The search has been ongoing for 8 days, terrifying Slater’s family each second. Here are the latest details of Jay Slater’s disappearance.
Jay Slater’s Tenerife Trip
19-year-old Jay Slater traveled to Tenerife, Spain with his friend, Lucy Law for a chance to party at the NRG Music Festival. The event was hosted in the Papagayo Nightclub at Playas de la Americas on June 16th. He met two British men who invited him to their Airbnb at Buenovista del Norte in the Rural de Teno mountain range. His last Snapchat confirmed his location when he posted a video recording on June 17th. Jay also missed the bus to return to Playas de las Americas.
According to Airbnb owner, Ophelia Medina Hernandez, she saw him walking near Masca. He called Lucy at 8:30 AM, informing her he was walking 10 hours to return to their accommodation. Jay suffered a cut on the leg from a cactus and was on the verge of dehydration. Lucy grew worried after she noticed he was nowhere to be seen that evening. She reported his disappearance immediately to police at 9:04 PM.
An Emotional Search
When the news broke out to Jay Slater’s family and friends, they flew from Britain to Tenerife to find any leads showing where Jay could be on June 18th. Spanish Guardia Civil began at the source of his last phone reception in Rural de Teno. They received an anonymous tip on June 19th that Jay was last seen at Los Cristianos, a beach near Plsyas a las Americas. It was immediately dismissed after finding no trace of Jay’s whereabouts.
Jay’s mother, Debbie, and Lucy became aware of prank callers and Internet trolls who tried to throw the police off-course from their investigation as Jay Slater’s Instagram had been hacked pretending to be Jay. On the 20th of June, Jay’s birth father Warren joins the search with his older brother, Zak at Masca. Thanks to Ophelia’s account, the Guardia Civil investigates Rural del Teno and the Airbnb he stayed overnight. Both parents continuously tell the press for their son to come home.
The Latest Development
The newest evidence that has come to light is a CCTV snapshot from Santiago del Tiede that was taken at 6 PM on June 17th. Debbie was told by an eyewitness they had seen Jay Slater with the two men who invited him to their Airbnb pass by the area. Santiago del Tiede is about four miles from Masca, expanding three areas to search for the young man including the ravine in Rural de Tero.
As the investigation continues, Britain’s police force is suspecting a possible third party may be involved with Jay’s disappearance. Joining the Spanish Guardia Civil is Detective Mark William-Thomas who will be investigating the assumed two British men. During the search, the police refused any international enforcement to get involved until it went on for a week. William-Thomas promised Jay Slater’s family that he could be found in three days.
Slater Family GoFundMe
As investigations continue for Jay Slater, his family will need the funds to resume their stay until the 19-year-old is safe and sound. Lucy created a GoFundMe on June 20th with a goal of £30,000 ($38,070 in the US) to cover the vacation expenses for 15 people. In only three days, they passed their goal, raising over £32,000. Yet this news didn’t sit well with some people following the case.
People who have seen the GoFundMe page assume the family will use the money for a different purpose. Today, Debbie Duncan replied to the allegations in the latest page post:
“We have not yet withdrawn any funds. We are currently covering the trip expenses ourselves. The donation funds will remain on hold until further updates.”
Jay Slater was last seen wearing a grey-green sports shirt with shorts and tennis shoes and carrying a black bag. If you like to show your support, consider donating to the official Jay Slater GoFundMe.
