Former United States President Joe Biden recently interviewed with The View co-hosts for the second time since leaving the White House. He blamed sexism and racism for why former Vice President Kamala Harris lost to President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Biden defeated Trump in the 2020 presidential election, which was met with accusations of fraud by Trump, his team, and his MAGA supporters.
Joe Biden Blames Harris’ Loss on Racism and Sexism
Biden said he wasn’t surprised at Harris’s election defeat to Trump last year, blaming the defeat on sexism and racism. Co-Host Sara Haines asked Biden if he was surprised Harris lost to Trump last November, noting optimism among the Democratic Party after Biden withdrew from the race. He said, “I was very disappointed, but I was not surprised,” in his interview with The View.
Biden clarified that he didn’t mean he thought Harris was more qualified to take the Oval Office. Instead, he said that Trump’s team “went the sexist route” by insinuating doubt that a woman can run as president, and playing the race card, a tactic that the right often accuses the left of doing. Harris served as Biden’s Vice President during his term in office.
Biden said, “I have never seen as successful and quite as consistent a campaign undercutting the notion that a woman couldn’t lead the country, and a woman of mixed race.” Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin asked the former president about last year’s polling, showing that only 28% of voters felt that the country was going in the right direction. She also asked Biden if he bears some responsibility for Trump’s reelection victory.
Biden said, “Yes, I do. I was in charge, and he won. “The former president blamed Trump for gutting a bipartisan agreement on border security, which would’ve given Biden a significant jump on a primary issue in the campaign last year. Instead, Trump argued that Biden was ignoring the problems of border security and was responsible for the flood of migrants across the border. Biden also discussed his administration’s legislative accomplishments, including an infrastructure bill.
However, he said that “we weren’t quite as good as he was” regarding marketing his accomplishments. Biden criticized Trump’s performance in office, warning that he was thumbing his nose at NATO and other allies. “He has had the worst 100 days that any president has ever had,” the former president said. Later, his wife, former First Lady Jill Biden, joined him. His appearance came at the news when Trump announced a trade agreement with the UK. Trump’s press conference was set for 10 a.m. but was delayed 45 minutes.
Trump continued to blame Biden, and Joy Behar noted that Trump mentioned the former president’s name 52 times. Behar asked, “Why is he so fixated on you?” Biden responded, “I beat him. I’m used to dealing with bullies.” Biden also said that he is writing his presidential memoir, but he has to finish it within a year. In response to claims of a decline in his cognitive ability in his final year, Biden said, “They are wrong. There is nothing to sustain that.”
Final Thoughts
Despite criticizing Trump on some occasions in his interview, he took partial responsibility for Trump’s victory over Harris in the 2024 election. In other big news, a new pope was elected to lead the world’s 1.4 billion Roman Catholics. He is Robert Francis Pervost, who chose the name Leo XIV, and is the first pope from the United States. Pervost was born in Chicago and served for two decades in Peru. Trump also announced a new holiday commemorating the United States’ victory in World War II.
