The Karen Read trial has been overly exciting for all the wrong reasons. We’re over 60 witnesses in, and we know that it was snowing the night John O’Keefe passed away and that we have more questions than answers. Nearly a month later, and the prosecution still has not finished their witness list. Day 26 was rough for us all, but one witness seemed especially unenthused about testifying. Someone let the officer get back to his job and off the witness stand.
“Kill Me” Whisper
It appears that Trooper Nicholas Guarino whispered “kill me” shortly before the end of day 26 of the Karen Read trial. Guarino was about to read out messages between the defendant and the decedent (Karen Read and John O’Keefe, respectively), shortly before O’Keefe passed away. Most of us hate relationship drama, but not as much as this state trooper, apparently.
We have heard that the courtroom is small, runs warm even with the AC unit, and no one can hear anyone else. Guarino, sitting there in his full suit, had to be uncomfortable. We also know that the microphones help the people listening to the live stream, but they don’t help with the projection of sound in the courtroom. It’s possible Guarino didn’t know he would be heard whispering due to the awkward audio in the room.
Having to read about Karen Read begging John O’Keefe to call her back and demanding to know if there was ‘someone else’ more than once was cringy. If there’s one thing the Karen Read trial has shown, it’s that reading text messages in court is a very painful level of cringe. We thought Brian Higgins ‘romantic’ texts were embarrassing enough, and then our ears were permanently scarred with Trooper Proctor’s vulgar messages. The messages between O’Keefe and Read were the least difficult to hear, but most of us wouldn’t want to have to go over them in court either.
Day 26 Karen Read Trial Drama
Besides a witness appearing to whisper “kill me,” there was another very uncomfortable individual on the witness stand at the Karen Read trial. Trooper Joseph Paul, the ‘accident reconstructionist’ was steamrolled in a cross examination that appeared to leave him a shell of his former self before our eyes.
Defense Attorney Alan Jackson left no prisoners when he verbally broke down Trooper Paul. Paul is likely a very well-meaning individual, but he seemed very out of depth when testifying in trial. The trooper has a limited educational background and is relatively new to the field, so he didn’t seem prepared for testifying at the Karen Read trial.
Alan Jackson did not go easy on Trooper Paul. We all got second-hand embarrassment when the witness repeatedly was unaware of multiple basic physics terms like “acceleration.” The lawyer (and most of us watching) felt that an accident reconstructionist should have a basic understanding of the math and science behind their findings in order to testify as an ‘expert.’ Once again, in the Karen Read trial, we have major questions for the Massachusetts State Police.
