LGBTQ+ youth are at a higher risk for mental health concerns that can lead to long-term consequences if not addressed. More than 40% of LGBTQ+ young people considered attempting suicide in just the past year alone, with those who are also transgender, minorities, or nonbinary having higher rates than others.
Plus, many LGBTQ+ youth find that their home is not a conducive atmosphere to feel like themselves, be honest about who they are, and voice their concerns. Kids who are questioning their sexuality, finding themselves, and wondering about their future need a supportive and loving home environment to speak freely. However, fewer than 40% of LGBTQ+ youth report that their homes are nurturing and supportive environments that are LGBTQ+-affirming.
These roadblocks no doubt lead to problems with acceptance in the community, within themselves, and at home. A lack of support and positivity can cause mental health concerns that can be extremely detrimental to kids growing up without support and guidance.
LGBTQ+ Acceptance at School
Everybody wants to feel accepted and like they are a part of a group, especially when you are a young person or teenager at school. However, LGBTQ+ youth find that they have trouble ‘fitting’ in’ and they are at a higher risk of bullying in an educational environment. Around 50% of transgender or nonbinary people at school who found their school to be affirming were less likely to attempt suicide, showing the impact that a positive learning environment has on mental health.
Furthermore, the majority of LGBTQ+ youth have been harassed or bullied at school because other students thought they were lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer. It is important for adults, such as parents, physicians, counselors, and coaches, to remember that LGBTQ young people are not prone to a higher suicide risk, btu they are placed at a higher risk because of society’s treatment of them and stigmatization.
Anxiety and Depression
More than 54% of LGBTQ young people reportedly have experienced depression throughout their lifetime, including more than 3 in 5 transgender and nonbinary teenagers. This shows that a lack of acceptance, guidance, resources, and affirming culture can lead to negativity, anxiety, and stress in queer teenagers.
Lack of Mental Health Care
Finally, those who are in the LGBTQ community need to identify the lack of mental health care that is available for their needs and find solutions. Clinicians and therapists may lack the tools to identify the different backgrounds of those in the community and use the correct pronouns. A lack of compassion, education, and ‘grouping’ of LGBTQ members may prevent, or discourage, young people from attending therapy or seeing a physician in the first place.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness has stated that when those in the LGBTQ+ community attempt to break down barriers in the mental health community, they have better chances at recovery.
