Nicotine And ADHD: 3 Important Things You Need To Know

ADHD, which is also known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is something that many people have, and it can affect individuals in a vast number of ways. Just like other mental health conditions, dealing with this can be quite a challenge.

Having ADHD can make life pretty hard sometimes. Those who have it may find that they struggle with things like sitting still, paying attention, and abstaining from making impulsive decisions, among other things. Additionally, some people with this disorder may have other mental health conditions that are only made worse by it.

Furthermore, the problems that people face due to having this disorder can often lead them to self-medicating in some way. People self-medicate in different ways, but one common way to do it is to smoke or ingest nicotine in another type of way. Nevertheless, nicotine can be very harmful, and that’s especially true for people with ADHD.

People With ADHD Are More Likely to Smoke

It is important for each person to look out for their own wellness, but that is particularly hard for people who have ADHD since that condition might distract them from doing so. That is because it is a disorder that encourages them to seek out activities that make them feel good instantly, even if those activities are unhealthy for them.

Smoking is a good example of this. It can help some people feel good, but it is very unhealthy. Also, people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are more likely to smoke than other people. On the other hand, there is also some evidence to suggest that Concerta, which is a medication that treats ADHD, might help people quit.

Nicotine Might Improve Some ADHD Symptoms

Nicotine can do more than make people feel good. It turns out that sometimes consuming nicotine in whatever way a person chooses might actually, for a short time, help them out a little bit. This can make people disregard the fact that it is not healthy.

For example, the result of one study that was done suggests that the use of nicotine might help someone who suffers from symptoms like inattention. It might also help improve a person’s executive dysfunction, in addition to other things. This might sound good, but it isn’t. Those minor, short-lived benefits make it even harder for people to ditch nicotine.

There’s A Chance Certain Medications Might Be Affected

Everyone is different, which means that people choose different ways to empower their mental health. Additionally, one way lots of people improve their mental health is by taking medication. A large number of people who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are on medication, and something that they should know is that products that have nicotine in them might interact with some medications in a negative way.

In fact, if someone with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder doesn’t quit ingesting nicotine when they start a medication that is designed to ease their symptoms, they might actually start smoking more later on. That, along with addiction and interactions with medication, is just one of many ways in which a person with this condition may be affected if they ingest that addictive substance.
