Product Recall: Which Potato-Based Products Have Been Affected?

There have been many food ban laws across the state due to their detrimental effect on one’s health. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) places product recalls on goods the organizations perceive to be harmful to one’s health.

On May 9, 2024, the US FDA issued a recall on potato-based products with claims these products are contaminated with what could be risky to one’s health. Thus, which product was affected and what is contamination?

Veggies Made Great brand Broccoli Cheddar Breakfast Potato Bakes was affected by a product recall due to a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Also, the brand distributed these potato products to these states: New Mexico, California, Arizona, Colorado, Utah and Nevada.

After a food recall issuance, the Food and Drug Administration classifies how dangerous the product could be into three levels if consumed long-term. These levels include:

  • Class I is issued to products that could lead to severe health consequences or death if used.
  • Class II is issued to products that could cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences
  • Class III is put on products that might not cause adverse health problems if consumed.

Thus, the Veggies Made Great brand Broccoli Cheddar Breakfast Potato Bakes lands under the Class II level of product recall. Also, the company is to stop production of these products to maintain a more healthy environment.

Veggies Made Great brand Broccoli Cheddar Breakfast Potato Bakes is a frozen product individually wrapped in flow wrap with 18 bakes per box. It has a lot code of 111724 and a Net Weight of 36 OZ (2.25 LB) 1.02 KG. Also, it’s best if used by October 18, 2025.

What is Listeria?

 

Listeria is a bacterial infection that affects people with weaker immune systems. It is found in soil, water, and animal feces.  Also, you can get this from some processed foods or unpasteurized milk.

Symptoms of this infection include Fever, Chills, Muscle aches, Nausea, and Diarrhea. However, when it spreads to your system, symptoms include Headache, Stiff neck, Confusion or changes in alertness, Loss of balance, and Convulsions. 

Sometimes these symptoms show immediately or it might take 30 days to start showing these signs. Also, pregnant women could experience subtle signs like Little interest in feeding, Irritability, Fever, Vomiting, and Difficulty breathing

Finally, people with a weak immune system who are prone to having this infection are pregnant women, people aged 65 years and above, AIDs patients, chemotherapy patients, or people with diabetes or kidney disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), pregnant women are 10 times more prone to be infected by this disease, and could also lead to miscarriage. Also, the CDC posits that in a year, 1600 people in the United States get this infection and 260 people die from the disease.
