Got Disgusting Roaches? Try These 5 Home Remedies

Home remedies and cockroaches go side by side. Having them at home is a nightmare for any houseowner. No matter how big or small they are, these disgusting creatures spread very quickly because a roach becomes an adult in three to four months. A female roach lays 200 to 300 eggs annually! In just six months, you can probably imagine how your house is going to be filled with them if you don’t get rid of them.

It sounds very appealing when we talk about home remedies—using whatever you have lying around to treat roaches at home. But the majority of roach remedies are ineffective. To get rid of roaches as soon as possible and keep them from coming back, we’re here to discuss the finest natural DIY home remedies.

Home Remedies to Get Rid of Roaches

1) Baking Soda

Baking soda is present in every home, and it has unlimited uses, from cleaning fruits and veggies to cleaning mattresses (spritz on your mattress and vacuum it thoroughly for disinfecting it). Baking soda also helps keep the house safe from roaches.

For this home remedy, apply a thin layer of baking soda to any food item, such as an onion. After leaving the food item overnight, place it in a known infested area. Baking soda expands their little insect stomachs and makes them burst when they digest it.

2) Borax or Boric Acid

Are cockroaches killed by borax? Yes. In fact, it is one of the greatest natural solutions for getting rid of these little disgusting creatures. This product is inexpensive, readily available, and effective. Boron is what causes the magic, so it doesn’t really matter if you use borax or boric acid.

Add boric acid to any infested areas and mix it with something you think will seem appealing to roaches, like sugar, honey, jelly, peanut butter, onion juice, or anything else. A high concentration of the mixture is what you want, so add three parts borax to one part sugar. This will work as a perfect home remedy.

3) Citrus Fruits and Bay Leaves

Interestingly, citrus fruits are among the finest natural insect repellents. Simply arrange lemon slices on countertops to make unwanted insects disappear. But for cockroaches, you will need a stronger, lingering lemony smell. To achieve this, mix a few drops of lemon juice into the water you’ll be using to mop the floors. Or just get a floor cleaner with a citrus fragrance.

Bay leaves smell strongly like herbs and the woods and are very similar to thyme and oregano. There are also traces of crushed menthol present. Cockroaches loathe its fragrance as much as humans do. When there are bay leaves in closets and cabinets, cockroaches don’t usually go there. So, as a preventive measure, you can scatter bay leaves at night if your kitchen has these pests.

4) Dish Soap

Cockroaches have a natural waterproofing outer body called the exoskeleton. They have a thin layer of wax covering their outer sides, preventing moisture from escaping. Thus, splashing soapy water on them may destroy their wax layering and cause them to become dangerously dehydrated, just like borax and boric acid do.

All you have to do is take one liter of water and combine it with four tablespoons of dish soap. Transfer the mixture of water and dish soap into a spray bottle and sprinkle all the areas where you have seen them before. Although soap does not contain any hazardous ingredients, it may still eradicate roaches.

5) Corn Starch and Plaster of Paris

A common material used in our houses for castings and molds is plaster of Paris. When it is combined with water, the plaster of Paris hardens itself. You can probably imagine what would happen if cockroaches ate that powder.

With these two basic household items, you can quickly make an excellent homemade roach killer trap. For this recipe, equal parts work well since it attracts roaches with the promise of a starchy snack and kills them fast. Use it in any cracks, crevices, or areas where you believe they may be hiding.
