Manhattan District Attorney’s Office announced on Thursday, April 24, that former attorney and private equity executive Ryan Hemphill had been indicted on multiple charges of predatory sexual assault. Alvin L. Bragg made the announcement, and alleged that the defendant raped and sexual assaulted six different women over the course of five months. In total, the former attorney is facing 116 charges after the alleged brutal, violent, and predatory attacks.
Ryan Hemphill Charged With Sadistic and Horrible Crimes
On Thursday, the indictments were brought down on a powerful private equity executive, Ryan Hemphill, after evidence of brutal sexual assaults was brought to light. According to reports, law enforcement alleges that the man raped and assaulted six different women in his New York City apartment. The DA’s office also claims there may be many more survivors who have not yet been discovered, given the evidence they have found thus far.
The 43-year-old lawyer and executive has pleaded not guilty on all 116 charges brought against him. The allegations against Ryan Hemphill are truly disgusting and shocking. Court documents references acts that allegedly took place in the apartment, which include raping, assaulting, and punching women, waterboarding them, and stunning them with cattle prods, all while he videotaped the encounters. According to law enforcement, the tapes acted as a trophy for the assaults.
Ryan Hemphill was arrested on March 1 and has been held in jail awaiting trial. Victims and reports state that Hemphill would threaten the victims using his power and influence, beat them and drug them, and use weapons to scare victims into complying. In total, the assaults would last for multiple hours. The sadistic acts would end with him telling victims that he was untouchable and that there was nothing they could do.
The following excerpts come directly from the Manhattan DA website.
According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, beginning on October 3, 2024, HEMPHILL subjected six women to multiple-hour ordeals of physical and sexual violence inside his midtown Manhattan apartment. He allegedly raped his victims orally, anally, and vaginally, often under threat of torture if they did not comply. He forced or tricked them into ingesting various controlled substances that rendered them unconscious or significantly impaired. He slapped and punched them repeatedly and tied them up with handcuffs and other restraints. In one alleged incident, one of the victims was left shackled to the defendant’s bed for an extended period while she begged him to let her go.
HEMPHILL allegedly tortured his victims with electricity, using a cattle prod meant for livestock and a shock collar that he forced some women to wear around their necks, including while he raped them. He also allegedly tortured them psychologically by threatening them with guns and knives, urinating on them, and verbally humiliating and demeaning them. HEMPHILL convinced some of the women to confide in him about the details of their past sexual traumas, and then deliberately reenacted those acts. HEMPHILL allegedly recorded himself abusing the women on extensive cameras within his apartment.
After the disgusting assaults, Ryan Hemphill would send text messages and other communication to the victim, reportedly threatening them with money, power, and even organized crime, to keep them from reporting him. Some women were also allegedly forced onto tape saying they consented to the attacks, to keep them from reporting themselves as victims.
In court documents, a search warrant conducted on Ryan Hemphill found weapons, ammunition, and drugs in the apartment, as well as many texts sent to the victims. Law enforcement also turned up multiple surveillance cameras and tapes, capturing the assault of dozens of women. Some photos of the seizure and screenshots of the text messages were released to the public on the Manhattan DA website as well.
Manhattan District Attorney Speaks
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg held a press conference regarding Ryan Hemphill’s indictments.
“We allege that Ryan Hemphill raped and violently assaulted six different women in his apartment in just five months. Further, we allege that he threatened the women and used his position as an attorney to intimidate them and prevent them from reporting these crimes. This investigation is ongoing, and we have reasonn to believe there may be additional survivors. Our talented prosecutors and investigators, as well as our specially trained counselors, are here to support you, no matter how powerful the person who assaulted you may seem. Please call our Special Victims Division at 212-335-3400.”
New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica S. Teach was also at the press conference following the court appearance. “The details in this case are beyond disturbing — a sustained, calculated campaign of violence and cruelty that targeted vulnerable women. This kind of predatory abuse has no place in our city and will be met with the full force of the law. I want to commend the detectives from our Special Victims Division and Midtown South Precinct whose meticulous work led to this indictment. And I want to thank District Attorney Bragg and his team for their unwavering commitment to pursuing justice in even the most horrific of cases.”
That any human being could put another human being through this kind of torture, humiliation, and pain is unfathomable. That the number of victims could be in the dozens or even hundreds is absolutely sickening. The district attorney’s office believes the evidence against Ryan Hemphill is overwhelming, and they are seeking justice for all the victims of the alleged assaults. If convicted, the former attorney could spend the rest of his life behind bars. Hopefully, his indictment gives some peace to any victims suffering from the recorded attacks.
