Snack Hacks: Creative Twists on Popular Munchies

It’s hard not to notice that the prices of snacks have gone up, meaning it’s time to make our own. One of those annoying issues a good amount of people have experienced is avoiding purchasing a snack or two, to save money and to not snack, only to then feel terrible at the fact of not having snacks, when you need a little snack. Buying comfort food is an expensive thing now, it’s time to make your versions that are cheaper, healthier, more convenient, and to your taste because you’re the one making it. It’s also safer because it won’t be made as addictive as store-bought snacks.

The Purpose of a Snack

They are a group of convenient foods that are small, easy to prepare and eat, meant to be eaten in between meals, and to give bits of energy to keep one going through the day until they can eat a full meal. They have a reputation of being seen as unhealthy only in big amounts, sometimes categorized as comfort food, and do sometimes have a place in diets. There is a study on them, and they play an important role in enjoying life.

The type of snacks being referred to here aren’t those packages of mini cakes, that’s dessert, but market research may show that in the US, cake or mini muffins are a common choice for a snack. Nothing wrong with those there are a lot of ways people on diets can have those, and it’s fun to make a guilt-free version of your desserts.

Fruit commonly in a fruit bowl on the table, cookies in a jar, chips or crackers for your charcuterie board, popcorn for movie nights, nuts and seeds for the vegans or to share with birds and squirrels, yogurt popularly associated with the gymnast lovers, and finally candy and ice cream for the ones feeling sad or very happy.

Snack’s Prices and Benefits

It’s no surprise that everyone will worry about the calories that each type of snack has, whether it would be fruit, sweets, or salty things, and try to resist eating as much as possible unless as a reward or on a cheat day. Many people still look down on the idea of snacking, still labeling it as a comfort food even though, if done, correctly, it can help with diets, especially for those who are having trouble following theirs due to nutrition deficiency, or energy deficiency.

However, take a random chip bag or any bag with salty, sour, spicy, or any flavor made with an addictive crunch and it’s very understandable why many would look down on people eating those. Processed food does have some worrisome chemicals and ingredients. Snacks can be helpful by acting as tiny food to give you bits of energy throughout the day, and making your own can make them healthy and guilt-free.

How to Make Your Snack

Here are a few recipes to try out for some delicious healthy, guilt-free snacks. Good for making friends on diet restrictions, people with food allergy concerns, and your kids as a good bonding lesson on cooking and food.

Buy a sack of potatoes or sweet yams at the store for a good deal, along with vegetables consisting of cabbage and lettuce heads, vegetables commonly hated by kids, whole wheat flour, and easy cornbread mix, these will last a good while for these easy snack recipes.

Potatoes

  • If you have an air fryer kitchen appliance: Start with 3, wash and peel them, then cut them into fries or thin slices, and instead of salt, spice them however you want, then put them in the air fryer which should have a button setting for chips or fries. Once done, let them cool and put them in a bowl to eat, not too crunchy like the deep-fried ones but also not limp or raw, just right for eating. Sweet potatoes go well with this one.
  • Dice some potatoes into small cubes, cover them in whatever spices you want, grease your tray, and put them in the oven. Depending on your oven, toast or bake them at 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 176 degrees Celsius for 10 minutes or however crunchy you want it. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, put it in a bowl by your snack table and let it sit there, grab one to pop in your mouth every once in a while, as you walk by it.
  • If you have a steamer, the best kind would be to peel and cut a couple of potatoes before steaming them, and then mashing them up in a bowl. Add beaten egg into the mixture, whatever spices you want, and mix until you can pick it up and mold it into a small shape easy to pick up. Set up a small assembly of beaten egg in a small bowl, and a flat, wider bowl filled with cornbread mix from a bag, as it helps things to stick better than cornstarch. Fry and flip them in a pan on medium heat with some vegetable oil and done!

Greens

  • Lettuce or cabbage chips! Take that lettuce head you bought, or the cabbage head that’s taking a while for you to finish, and cut each of the leaves into small, easy-to-bite pieces. Spread them out on your baking tray, sprinkle your choice of spice powder over them, and either spray them with cooking spray or lightly brush over each of them with vegetable oil and bake for 10-20 minutes at 350-325 Fahrenheit/ 176 Celsius, until they are crunchy enough to your liking.
  • Instead of making lettuce chips, here’s a silly idea, just chop the lettuce into easy-to-pick-up pieces and begin to make some sauce. Get a small bowl, add some mayo as a base, add a pinch of soy sauce, and something spicy, and stir until combined. Just dip the lettuce pieces in and eat them like chips. The sauce recipe is just an example, you use whatever you want.
  • Do you know those vegetables your kids hate eating for dinner? Eggplants, carrots, squash, cucumbers, and stuff. Slice the carrots into thin coins, the squash and cucumbers diagonally into thicker coins, and the eggplants also thinly, but for big ones, cut the thin slices into fours. Spice them to your kids’ preference, or don’t and just lightly brush them with vegetable oil, and then pop them in the oven to toast for 10-15 minutes or more depending on preference.

Grains

  • Put a cup of whole grain flour in a bowl, add a bit of milk, and on egg in and mix until combined. Get your pan greased and ready on high heat, and then low heat as your small circles of the batter into the pan, best is about 2 inches in width. Flip when the sides look solid, put the cooked ones on a cute plate, and make sure your spatula is also greased for easy flipping. Put your finished, cute little mini pancakes on a snack table, and simply grab one to eat each time you pass by it.
  • Get another mixing bowl, mix a cup of flour, a pinch of salt, half a stick of butter (or use oil), an egg, some water, a spoon of sugar, and a spoon of yeast. Mix it all into dough, divide it into smaller doughs the size of your palm, then knead each one into a small ball and place it onto a greased tray with a towel on top to rest in a warm room for an hour. Brush them with melted butter before baking at 400 for 7-10 minutes. Not enough people appreciate tiny bread loaves.

Conclusion

It will be difficult to resist avoiding snacks considering you put so much work into making each snack. You have to savor your effort so that you don’t have to go through that whole process again! Unless you are willing to go through those recipes again to make them, then you deserve to have a snack every once in a while.
