What is a Brussels Sprout?

A Brussels sprout is a member of the cruciferous vegetable family, along with broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, and collard greens. It’s important to eat your Brussels sprouts because they are a good source of vitamin C and K, fiber, and folate.

The veggie is named after its location of origin in Brussels, Belgium, where it has been utilized as a food source since the 16th century. In America, they are mostly grown in California. They are in season for half of the year, from roughly fall to spring.

Why Are They Usually So Gross?

Brussels sprouts are “gross” for a number of reasons.

One of those reasons is that we’ve been told they’re gross, and the power of suggestion is strong (spinach was also hated, until Popeye showed up). Some research has suggested that some people are more sensitive to the particular type of bitterness that exists in the sprouts due to our DNA.

Glucosinolates that exist in most veggies in the Brussels sprouts family are responsible for the “bitterness” of the sprout. The compounds are designed to keep predators away, and they provide many of the nutrients that the veggie offers. Talk about a catch-22! Eating a Brussels sprout when it isn’t ripe enough is another way to get a more bitter taste. Try to catch them in season!

The Best Way to Cook Brussels Sprouts

Do not decide that you hate Brussels sprouts until you’ve eaten them the way I’m going to describe them. It was a game-changer for me and my household. I prefer the crispy Asian variety. You cut them in half, soak them, and then bake them in the oven covered in oil. Wait until they are a little crispy and charred before pulling them from the oven.

After that you’re tossing your charred sprouts in some special sauce. Throw some soy sauce, syrup, avocado oil, garlic and honey in a saucepan and thicken the ingredients up, before tossing the Brussels sprouts in. Use some salt and pepper on your now lightly sauced sprouts until they’re just right.
