Trauma-Based Therapy: Benefits and Techniques

Trauma-Based Therapy

Trauma-based therapy offers people who endured severe traumatic experiences a chance to breathe comfortably, exist soundly, and have faith that there are good things on the horizon and there is more to their life than just their trauma. It is not an easy process by any means, it can be excruciating and challenging to go through, but the outcome is extremely fulfilling and worthy. There are many different types and techniques that therapists exercise in trauma-based therapy. They differ according to one’s needs and type of trauma.

Types of Trauma-Based Therapy

Prolonged exposure (PE): In this type, the therapist would expose the person with trauma to the source of their fear or trauma-if possible- to help familiarize their brain with the element that instills fear in them. Gradually, they realize that it is not as threatening as their brains have been portraying it to be.

Cognitive processing therapy (CPT): People dealing with trauma sometimes have preconceived beliefs about their traumas, such as the reason it happened and the influence it had on their development. This type helps deconstruct the harmful notions they might have about themselves and helps them approach their trauma healthily.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT): This type is directed toward kids and teenagers who had an early trauma such as physical or sexual abuse, violence, or sudden loss of a parent or loved one. Due to their young age, they require specific treatment and care to help them navigate the outcome of their trauma, either on their beliefs or their behaviors.

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR): People with post-traumatic stress disorder have a hard time recalling their trauma without it triggering them. This type of therapy helps them reprocess the memories they have of their trauma using a rhythmic left-right (bilateral) stimulation. Eventually, recalling their trauma will not feel as scary and threatening.

Imaginal Exposure: This technique helps people confront their trauma by envisioning it and narrating it to the therapist. It helps in diminishing the association between their thoughts and the fear or anxiety they cause. All their unwanted and negative memories will eventually become less triggering until they are healed completely.

In vivo exposure: As its name suggests- in vivo means in real life- this technique is conducted outside the therapist’s room. It encourages people with trauma to face the situations or activities that they have been avoiding because of their trauma.

Written Account and Impact Statement: Through these two techniques, people with trauma are encouraged to pour their hearts into words. In the former, they are to write an account that describes what they went through. In the latter, they are to express why they think that traumatic event happened and how it impacted their life

Cognitive Restructuring Strategies: This technique helps people with trauma to restructure their thoughts and beliefs about themselves and the people around them. It helps break any destructive and unhelpful thought patterns so they can lead a much more peaceful and fulfilling life.

Benefits of Trauma-Based Therapy

Trauma-based therapy is a much-needed step for people who have undergone any traumatic event, regardless of its nature or duration. It helps them not to be trapped in endless, unexplainable pain for the rest of their life. It frees them from the traumatic grasp of the hard times they sadly had to endure.

Overcoming Your Fear

Trauma can cause people to fear certain situations and force them to avoid them entirely, which can stand in the way of their functionality in day-to-day life or limit their opportunities in life in general. Trauma-based therapists can hold your hand in their first steps toward confronting, overcoming, and healing from this trauma and its impact on their lives.

Learn Healthier Coping Mechanisms

People with trauma can face difficulties in developing healthy coping mechanisms because their trauma can distort their perception of themselves and the world around them. Therapists help you break down their reactions and behaviors to learn exactly where they come from, and gradually, you will build new and healthier ones.

Be Heard and Validated

Unfortunately, many people with trauma do not have any outlet in which they can release their emotions or talk out their struggles because they do not feel safe or confident enough that there are people who can understand, empathize, and validate their pain. Therapists strive to offer a safe environment in which you can talk about your experiences without feeling the weight of people’s gaze and judgment.

Conclusion

Life can be cruel, and it can put any of us through an unimaginable amount of pain. It can be hard to pick oneself from it and keep moving through life unscathed. The first step into healing is acknowledging the pain. Today, more than ever, we need to comprehend that therapy is necessary in our lives. We are not all equipped to deal with certain experiences, and our lack of knowledge can easily turn our lives into a living hell if the necessary actions are not taken.

You owe it to yourself to take care of your physical and mental health in equal measure. Do not allow any unfortunate event to define who you are and the direction of your life for the rest of time. Seek help and offer yourself a refreshing breath of air.
