Triptychs, as well as trilogies and trinities, have deep roots in culture, philosophy, and religion. Hence, they can be about pretty much anything, divine or earthly. They can also be used in several different ways, like juxtaposing images and ideas, forming a complex metaphor, or telling a story much like a stage play would. So, why not make a triptych about your very own travels?
Triptych and The Powers of Three
Long before I stopped to think about it for the first time, I always liked trinities. When I was a kid, it was completely unavoidable to learn about the Holy Trinity; little did I know that this sort of concept was present in Hinduism (the Trimurti) and in Buddhism with something known as the Triple Gem. At that time, other than The Holy Trinity, I was only aware of Neptune because there was a picture of him at home, and I thought his trident was kind of cool. I think I might consult my therapist on this.
The thing is, I think triptychs are great. Take Hieronymus Bosch, for instance. He made several famous triptychs, like the notorious “The Garden of Delights.” This piece of art made roughly 500 years ago, contains images that are both mesmerizing and disturbing at the same time. The latter is of obvious if you consider the titles of each panel: The Garden of Eden, The Garden of Earthly Delights, and The Hell, but it is one such work you revisit over and over and somehow never gets old.
Crafting a Travel Triptych
Getting back to an earlier point, if you have some wall to spare or one that desperately needs something on it, you may want to consider the travel triptych. So, the first thing is to think about a trip that was special or memorable to you. Also, you need to have the raw material—the photos. Of course, you can get creative and make a collage of postcards, tickets, or other graphic memorabilia, but the best approach to the project will probably be just having the pictures and going through them.
The selection and editing process can be a thing in itself, especially if you are a snap-happy person like a Japanese tourist in the 90s. In the end, you need to go by quality above all. And what I mean by quality is not necessarily about camera lenses and pixels, because you can do some cheating with software today, but rather framing and composition. Because remember, you have to think about a suitable trio that might represent a particular place or event, and these images need to speak to one another in some way.
The Final Three

Once you have a bunch of photos you like, what I would do is print them out. The reason is that once you have the physical photos in your hands, you can manipulate them like index cards and rearrange them in different ways until you find the sequence you like best. Also, when printed on paper, you can get a better idea of what the blown-up image would look like and the way it would “behave” with whatever colors and patterns are present in the space where you want to place your triptych.
Time to Get that Triptych Up that Wall
OK, you now have the photos and have decided whether the three will be the same size, the centerpiece will be larger, etc. So, now you need to get your hands on a measuring tape and begin figuring out what goes where and why. Also, what kind of framing, and whether the photos will have matting or something else? This article will help you DIY this process, especially if you want to go big: Large Scale Modern Art Triptych.
A Rewarding Journey
A travel triptych is a fun project that may have a very satisfying and somewhat useful result. It can be a great way to relive memories and make them stand out in a “new light,” so to speak. It can also become a project to share with your significant other and family unless it’s all about a solo trip you made to see the pyramids in the Giza Valley. Whatever it is, remember that what matters most is not the destination but the journey itself.
