Jumping Rope and Running: “Which Is Better for You?”

Jumping Rope and Running are two activities that bring up a plethora of memories and emotions dating back to our early childhood days and Elementary School P.E. Classes. And they are still deemed healthy activities in our adult lives not only because they help us stay physically fit and active.

Interestingly, there are a number of health benefits that are recapturing the attention of exercise connoisseurs everywhere. But what are these health benefits? Let’s take a look and see what experts are saying to evaluate whether Jumping Rope or Running has the most health benefits.

 Jumping Rope

Jumping Rope is beneficial to your to day-to-day health and allows you to combine the concept of multi-tasking and improving your health. But what else is there? Let’s see what the experts have to say and explore how this exercise can be introduced into your daily workout routine.

This exercise is a simple activity that requires you to swing a nylon rope over your head and shoulders down to your feet. Because this requires constant movement it can be done a variety of ways such as choosing to jump forwards or backwards, quick or slow, and you can even switch it from jumping on two legs to one.

Experts are fond of this exercise because it can be used as strength and endurance training if you are brave enough to use a weighted or speed rope which increases Units of Rotational Speed or Revolutions Per Minute (RPMs).

Due to health benefits such as weight loss, the alleviation of stress, boosting the immune system, improving coordination, and the promotion of blood flow and the improvement of Cardiovascular Health experts believe those who participate in this activity will benefit from the increase in Anaerobic Cardiovascular Exercise as the high intensity of it speeds up the heart rate and allows the muscles to store additional energy to get through the day.

 Running

Much like Jumping Rope, Running is a highly concentrated Cardiovascular Exercise and requires no exercise equipment unless you are using a Treadmill and can done at any time and from anywhere. Running is perhaps one of the best forms of cardio exercise one can do. In fact, running as little as 10 minutes a day can reduce the occurrence of cardiovascular disease by half.

It is estimated that 32% of all global deaths are a consequence of cardiovascular disease making running a favorite of experts everywhere because it lowers your resting heart rate and reduces stress to the heart muscle keeping it healthy. But the same can apply to joint health as well.

Why Running is Preferred Over Jumping Rope

An observational medical study of 675 Marathon Runners showed that all had better joint health than those that did not regularly participate in running and little to no arthritis as they aged.

Running can also, however, improve your ability to think, reduces the common cold and associated infections by up to 43%, boosts your emotional health, and improves your quality of sleep. Aside from this there are some negative aspects of running that should be considered such as irreversible joint damage and is redundant making it harder to do for those that require switching up their exercise routines.

While Jumping Rope may be beneficial for promoting weight loss, coordination, and balance, is relatively easy, improves the thickness of bones by increasing the buildup of Calcium Phosphate, is a Confidence Booster, promotes Balance and Coordination, and reduces Anxiety and Depression it puts more stress on the knees than running and is not as easily accessible as running and requires more space.
