His remarks quickly drew attention, online, adding a new layer of uncertainty to an already volatile geopolitical relationship.

Trump posted on Truth Social, “For 47 years, the Iranians have been ‘tapping’ us along, keeping us waiting, killing our people with their roadside bombs, destroying protests, and recently wiping out 42,000 innocent, unarmed protestors, and laughing at our now GREAT AGAIN Country. They will be laughing no longer!”

The message comes as Iranian state media reported that Tehran issued its response to the United States’ peace proposal through Pakistan, which has been serving as a mediator throughout the tense conflict. According to reports, the goal is to secure a short-term agreement that would put a hold on fighting for another 30 days and end Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the New York Times reported, citing Iranian officials.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian Responds on Social Media

Sunday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian responded with a willingness to engage in talks without giving in to surrender or threats. He posted on X (formerly Twitter), “We will never bow our heads before the enemy, and if talk of dialogue or negotiation arises, it does not mean surrender or retreat. Rather, the goal is to uphold the rights of the Iranian nation and to defend national interests with resolute strength.”

Other news organizations this week reported that the Trump administration is also looking for a moratorium halt on Iran’s nuclear enrichment activities in return for Washington rolling back sanctions and unfreezing billions of dollars in Iranian assets. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated Sunday that the U.S. is seeking a resolution in an interview with NBC News’s “Meet the Press.”

Trump Downplays Economic Concerns Amid Rising Tensions

Tuesday, Trump made a statement that he doesn’t think about the financial strains facing Americans. The comments came as new data showed another rise in consumer prices, partly due to higher gas prices tied to the conflict. He said most Americans understand a nuclear-armed Iran as a threat and even suggested that they would understand if the stock market goes up or down a little bit. Per NBC News, speaking with reporters, Trump said, “The only thing that matters when I’m talking about Iran, they can’t have a nuclear weapon. I don’t think about the Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody.

“I think about one thing — we cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all. The most important thing by far, including whether our stock market, which, by the way, is at an all-time high, but including whether our stock market goes up or down a little bit, the most important thing by far is that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. Every American understands,” he added.

Iran has blocked access to the Strait of Hormuz since the U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran back in February. Gas prices in the U.S. have risen, and higher fuel prices have affected the economy. It remains to be seen where things go moving forward in the geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and Iran.
