5 People Injured Near Indiana University In Horrific Shooting
A shooting broke out just blocks away from the Indiana University campus, turning what should have been a good time into a chaotic crime scene. The incident left five young women suffering from gunshot wounds, casting a heavy shadow over what should have been a joyous weekend. Festivities took a dark and terrifying turn late Saturday night into early Sunday morning, leaving the local community and students grappling with the shock of sudden violence.
Chaos Erupts in Downtown Bloomington Near Indiana University Campus

The nightmare unfolded right around 12:25 a.m. on Sunday along Kirkwood Avenue, a popular downtown strip frequently packed with students and visitors. Patrol officers from the Bloomington Police Department were already in the area monitoring the large crowds when the unmistakable sound of gunfire shattered the late-night atmosphere.
According to Bloomington Police Chief Mike Diekhoff, officers immediately rushed toward the commotion. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, right outside a local Five Guys restaurant, they discovered five victims. These victims, all women ranging in age from 17 to 22 years old, had been struck by bullets or bullet fragments. Emergency personnel rushed to treat the wounded. While four of the young women were treated and subsequently released, one victim required hospitalization and remains in stable condition.
Investigators looking into the violence revealed that multiple individuals in the crowd were seen drawing handguns during the altercation. However, authorities currently believe that only two people actually opened fire. Police have emphasized that this was not a random act of violence, and the university quickly released a statement confirming that no Indiana University student is believed to be involved in the shooting.

The Terrifying Attack Inside Five Guys
The sheer human panic that followed the gunfire cannot be overstated. As the shots rang out, the instinct to survive triggered a terrifying stampede. Four additional people sustained cuts and scrapes as they desperately fled the area, ending up in local hospitals for their physical injuries, though the emotional toll will likely last much longer.
Muslimah Davis, a student at Indiana University, was working behind the counter at the Five Guys on Kirkwood Avenue when the violence erupted just outside the glass doors. The reality of the situation set in instantly for the employees and patrons trapped inside. Davis described the terrifying incident in detail, of people rushing for survival in the shooting near the Indiana University campus.
Davis said, per WRTV, “Before I know it, a horde of people started to rush in. People were jumping over tables and trying to get as far back in the store as they could, like the farthest away from the door. We had people jumping over counters and stuff. It was really bad and hectic, and everyone was genuinely terrified.” The aftermath was a grim scene of police tape, drones, helicopters, and ambulances filling the streets, replacing the earlier sounds of celebration with sirens and weeping.
Gun Laws and the Search for Answers
The horrific event quickly sparked discussions regarding public safety and local legislation. Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson strongly condemned the gun violence that marred the weekend. Frustrated by the limitations placed on local governance, the mayor addressed the community’s demands for stricter safety protocols at large gatherings. Thomson said, per CBS News, “It has been suggested that we forbid guns from public gatherings in the future in Bloomington. Unfortunately, Indiana gun laws prohibit such actions. And if the gun laws remain as they are, anyone can open carry.”
This limitation stems from recent legislative changes. In 2022, the state repealed its concealed carry permitting requirement. Currently, the state does not require background checks or permits for handgun purchases at the point of sale, making it incredibly difficult for local officials to restrict firearms at public events like the Little 500.
Community Calls for Enhanced Safety Measures
For the students who call Bloomington home, the illusion of safety has been severely fractured. Many are now second-guessing their weekend plans, especially when non-students flood the city for major events. Students and local workers are pleading for increased security, hoping for professionals on standby who specialize in de-escalating conflicts before weapons are ever drawn.
As of Monday evening, police had not announced any arrests regarding the shooters. The Bloomington Police Department continues to urge the public to come forward. Anyone who possesses video footage or information from the Kirkwood Avenue area around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday is heavily encouraged to contact Detective Chris Scott at 812-339-4477.
