Wade Wilson Sentenced to Death

In 2019, Wade Wilson was charged with first-degree murder and a slew of other charges. He was arrested on October 8, 2019. His trial finally began on June 1, 2024, lasting for a week. The jury found him guilty of all charges brought against him, especially first-degree murder. His sentencing was postponed to this month. On August 27, 2024, he was sentenced to death for the murders of Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz.

Wade Wilson is nicknamed the ‘Deadpool Killer’ since his name is the same as the fictional Marvel character. He is a Florida native who was given up for adoption as a baby. He was adopted and grew up in Northern Florida, in the Panhandle. Wilson is a 30-year-old man whose face and neck are covered with tattoos, including a few swastikas. After an attempted escape from prison, he was connected with a white supremacy prison gang.

In 2019, he was charged for the murders of two women in southern Florida. Wade Wilson met Kristine Melton at a bar on October 7, 2019. He ended up back at Melton’s home, where she went to sleep. Wilson strangled her in her sleep and stole her car. Shortly after, he came across Diane Ruiz and asked her for directions. He lured her into the car and began beating and strangling her. He pushed her out of the car and repeatedly ran her over before taking her body and dumping it in a field. Wilson called his biological father after to tell him what he had done. His father, Steven Testasecca, reported him to the police.

Wade Wilson’s Sentencing

Wade Wilson’s sentencing was originally set for July but was postponed to August while experts investigated him. A psychologist and neurologist testified on his behalf that he had a traumatic brain injury as a child and had severe mental health disorders. However, his diagnosis did not give him any grace with the jury. Nor did the judge spare him on sentencing. The jury found his crimes to be monstrous and wickedly evil. The majority of jurors voted in favor of the death penalty on both counts of first-degree murder. In the state of Florida, only eight jurors are required to vote in favor of the death penalty for the judge to consider it.

Throughout the trial, many argued for Wilson that he was impaired by drugs on the day of the murders. He has people pleading for him to receive a lighter sentence, including lovesick women. However, the judge ruled in favor of the death penalty. He stated that Wilson’s addiction or mental impairments do not make his sentencing unfair. In fact, Wilson was smug and showed no remorse as he was being sentenced. His final request to the court was that they move him up on death row so he can be executed as soon as possible.

Final Thoughts

There are almost 300 people on death row in the state of Florida. The average amount of time a prisoner spends on death row in Florida is around 14 years from the time of sentencing. Although Wade Wilson has requested to be put to death as soon as possible, he could be looking at a decade or two on death row. He will be held at the Lee County Jail until he can be transferred into the Florida prison system. Once he is transferred, he will be held in the Union Correctional Institution along with others on death row.
