Sketching for Beginners: Is This a Hobby For Me?

Sketching is a cool hobby

You may or may not have sketched before. Sketching is a very particular form of drawing, but it is not the same as drawing. It is a rough outline, abstract shapes, and designs, ideas. It is an incomplete thought. Many times people sketch for different types of jobs, which we will get into shortly.

My daughter has a natural talent for sketching and drawing. But she also puts plenty of practice into it. She told me that she draws at least once a day. She usually draws with what she has at the time. It could be a regular number 2 pencil or a 0.7 lead mechanical pencil. Whatever she decides to draw with that day, her drawings come from years and years of practice, and from a lively imagination.

There are different types of sketch work that you can do. Whichever type you pick, you have to go through a process of learning your style of sketching. Of course, it will still be incomplete, but you’ll have direction in your sketching. But just as my daughter draws daily, you may have to sketch every day to keep it in practice. Draw in your spare time. Draw when you’re upset. Draw when you’re happy. Or draw when you’re feeling blue.

Beginner Sketching: What is it?

Sketching is a quick rough draft of a drawing. As stated above, sketches are best known for being abstract, incomplete ideas. Think of it as a rough draft of a term paper. You get your basic ideas down, but you still have more to do to it before it’s complete. Although, you should still get a clear picture of your idea.

There are four main types of sketching: fashion, industrial, travel, and interior. These sketches are best done in pencil and on quality paper such as in a sketchbook and drawing pencils with either softer graphite (6B) or more rigid graphite (9H). Then you want to start by practicing basic lines, shapes, and patterns. The more you practice the better you’ll be. You want to be able to sketch roughly, but it can be difficult for beginners. However, your eraser is your friend!

Do your best and don’t rush the process. Sketch simple shapes at first like triangles, circles, and squares. Practice every day and you won’t become rusty. If you need help with learning how to sketch, find a tutorial online on YouTube or buy one with a sketchbook at a store; your basic one will come with a how-to tutorial.

Beginner Sketching: Tools

One thing that is important to note is that you won’t know what brand to use until you try a few. Each artist has his/her brands they like best. Brands such as Faber-Castel, Prismacolor, Derwent, and Blick are some to consider using. If you want to go for pens, go for fine-tipped microns. Those are often the artist’s choice for architects and the like.

I recommend using a pencil because you can erase it if you make a mistake. If you use micron pens, then you might be more confident in your abilities to sketch. Micron pens are used for outlining. Pencils have different harshness of graphites and you need to consider which you’d like to use. The combination of letters and numbers printed at the top are there for your consideration. Play around with them and get a feel for them.

This brings me to my next point: use a quality sketchbook. There are tons you can find sketchbooks at places such as Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc. Find a book that resonates with you and sketch in it every day. A book that is sketched every day will have more value to you than one that sits there collecting dust. I bought a Master’s Touch sketchbook at Hobby Lobby with acid-free paper, appropriate for all dry media.

Beginner Sketching: What’s next?

“Even the simplest of tools can empower people to do great things.” This quote sums it up pretty neatly. If you have the right tools to do anything, you can accomplish great things, and the tools don’t have to be fancy to make something nice.

My daughter once said, “You don’t need expensive art supplies to make something nice.” And that’s true, you just have to know your medium and understand what you can do with it. There is virtually no limit to what you can do with a plain marker. My daughter even once suggested that it was perfect for calligraphy. Who knew?!

You could even make a career out of sketching because there are different types. There’s industrial, which is like architectural drawings; interior, which is interior design and kind of like a rough draft of a blueprint; fashion, where you draw people in different clothing styles; and travel. Travel sketching is the practice of drawing while traveling. You can draw what you see on your travels and be totally Zen. So, artists, start your “engines” and dive in!
