Wellness 101: Everything You Need to Know About Living Well

In today’s world, the term “wellness” has gained some traction as individuals seek to improve their day-to-day lives. But what exactly is wellness? Often used interchangeably with terms like health and wellbeing, wellness is the term used for the idea of an all-encompassing and holistic approach to living a fulfilling life. Wellness can be broken down into several aspects of life. Some theories of wellness cover a specific number of categories such as physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual, and environmental.

Wellness is the active process of becoming aware of what influences and impacts your daily life and acting upon those influences to make positive changes within it. The basic concept of wellness is “thriving not surviving”.

Physical Wellness

Physical wellness has everything to do with your body. Physical wellness encompasses your very basic physical needs and anything that might impact it. What you eat, how you eat it, whether you exercise or not, how much sleep you get each night – these are all different facets of physical wellness. It is important to take notice of these different aspects of your physical well-being and evaluate whether you have habits that are negatively impacting it, such as excessive drinking, smoking, or not getting enough sleep.

Emotional Wellness

Emotional wellness is all about the ability to recognize and understand your emotions, cope with stressful or intense situations, and build healthy relationships with the people around you. How you manage stress, whether you practice mindfulness or meditation, whether you seek counseling when necessary, and whether you have a strong emotional support system are all factors in emotional wellness. This is often referred to as “mental health” and is an essential part of wellness.

Social Wellness

Social wellness goes hand in hand with emotional wellness in that it depends on your support system. Social wellness is all about who you interact with regularly and whether those interactions fulfill your basic social needs. Do you go to social events such as family gatherings? Maybe you volunteer in your community or participate in work activities. Social wellness relies on your interactions with others and whether they are fulfilling or not.

Intellectual Wellness

Intellectual wellness is about making sure that you are intellectually stimulated and engaging with your mind. Reading, learning new skills, and engaging in new hobbies are all ways that you can stimulate your mind and improve your intellectual wellness.

Spiritual Wellness

Spiritual wellness is about seeking your meaning and purpose in life. This can involve spiritual or faith-based practices such as going to church, meditating, or evaluating your personal values and beliefs. Every person’s spiritual wellness is different, but the overall idea is to reflect upon yourself, your life, and what your values are – are you living a fulfilling life in this aspect?

Environmental Wellness

Environmental wellness is about recognizing the impact that your environment has on you and taking steps to improve it to meet your needs and sustain it for the long run. For example, reducing waste in your life by practicing recycling or even just spending more time in nature. Environmental wellness looks different for everybody, but the idea is to respect the earth and its inhabitants, including yourself.

Conclusion

Wellness is important because it affects how we live our daily lives – and how we live our daily lives affects our wellness. A holistic approach to wellness ensures that we are physically healthy, emotionally balanced, socially connected, intellectually challenged, spiritually fulfilled, and environmentally conscious. This balance helps us to cope with the difficulties that we may face in life and be prepared to do so when the time comes.

Wellness is best looked at as a lifelong journey, not a destination. Our needs are constantly changing as we learn and grow. By making small, consistent steps toward wellness, you will notice an improvement in your daily life.
