The White House has issued a response to claims that Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are having marital issues and are now separated. The claims were made by biographer Michael Wolff. A White House spokesperson has called the claims “blatant lies and fabrications.” Wolff’s comments have sparked concerns about Trump’s marriage. The White House was quick to make a stern denial of the claims.
What To Know
Melania Trump was absent throughout her husband’s 2024 presidential campaign. Melania has made very few appearances since moving back into the White House. Her absence from the spotlight have reignited claims that there are troubled waters in her marriage.
On Tuesday, Wolff was a guest on the Daily Beast podcast. During the podcast, Wolff said, “They clearly do not in any way inhabit a marriage as we define marriage. And I think maybe we can more specifically say they live separate lives. They are separated. The president of the United States and the first lady are separated,” he then added. Wolff has written several books that have been highly critical of Trump.
Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, dismissed Wolff’s claims and went as far as to call Wolff a “blithering idiot.” He added that Wolff was “widely discredited due to his blatant lies and fabrications. He is an imbecile of the highest order, and his Trump Derangement Syndrome-addled brain has caused him to lead a miserable existence devoid of reality,” Cheung added.
Sources Talk To NYT
The New York Times published an article on May 7 that cited two sources that were privy to the first lady’s schedule. Those sources said that Melania had spent less than two weeks at the White House since Trump’s inauguration back on January 20. Sources shared that Melania “does not really live in Washington” and “vanishes from view for weeks at a time.”
Those sources added that the first lady was “deeply spooked” by the assassination attempts on Trump and worried about the safety of her family, especially her son, Barron. Sources say that the first lady spends the majority of her time split between Trump’s Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago, and Trump Tower in Manhattan.
Melania did not move into the White House during Trump’s first term right away. She remained in Manhattan for months with her son, Barron. She waited until Barron finished the school year. At the time, her son was only ten.
“I will be in the White House. And, you know, when I need to be in New York, I will be in New York. When I need to be in Palm Beach, I will be in Palm Beach. But my first priority is, you know, to be a mom, to be a first lady, to be a wife. And once we are in on January 20, you serve the country,” Melania told the media before her husband’s inauguration.
What is Next
Back on May 8, Melania made a rare public appearance. She joined her husband in the White House’s East Room for a Celebration of Military Mothers. It is unknown when she will make another appearance.
Melania Trump did accompany her husband to the Vatican on May 3 for the funeral of pope Francis. However, reports say that once they arrived back in Newark Melania got into a car and Trump boarded Air Force One. Melania did not accompany him on his tour of the Middle East.
Trump made a post-election promise that Melania would be an “active” first lady, but clearly, Melania had other plans. Those close to her say she is being “true to herself,” and that appears to mean spending little time with her husband and avoiding the White House as much as possible.
