Why These Snack Foods Might Be Banned

Ever heard the notion: “You are what you eat?” It’s vital that we take due diligence on what we consume daily, especially for children, because constant intake of unhealthy food leads to severe health conditions you didn’t see coming.

So what do you say? Spend your entire income on fixing your health later or acquire the little details that could improve your health’s longevity. I’d choose the latter if I were you.

Food Scientists found that some additives allowed in the United States are detrimental to health, as they cause cancer and organ and system damage. Europeans and some other countries have also banned the use of these additives in food preparation.

Few countries besides the United States are pushing bills to ban these additives to ensure the safety of children and adults. When these bills are passed into law, other US countries might follow the trend, which will cause a decline in the popular snack foods we consume daily.

What Are the Food Additives to Avoid When Buying Snacks?

I know, right? The stress of checking the ingredients for additives isn’t the most joyous thing to do, as one could lose their cravings. However, states like New York and California in the US are looking to ban these additives in food preparation. Thus, if your favorite snack contains any of these additives, beware, as it may be pulled from the market. These are the additives:

  1. Potassium Bromate (KBrO3)
  2. Titanium dioxide (E171)
  3. Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO) (E443)
  4. Propylparaben (E217)
  5. Artificial Food Dyes

Potassium Bromate: This additive is used as an oxidizing agent to promote more dough rising and make it springer and stronger. Now, if consumed long-term, it could lead to cancer. The most popular food that uses this additive is bread. Therefore, you should be mindful of the kind of bread you consume.

Titanium dioxide: This additive acts as an anti-caking and whitening agent for candies, pastries, and gums. Though the FDA claims that the concentration of this substance in food is safe, it raises concern about its effect on one’s health. If consumed for a long time, it could damage one’s DNA and immune system

Brominated Vegetable Oil: This contains chemical bromine which causes irritation in the nose and lungs when inhaled. It helps prevent ingredients in fruit-flavor soft drinks from separating. Also, the long-term consumption of this product poses a danger to thyroid health.

Propylparaben: Parabens are used as preservatives in cosmetics, personal care products, and packaged baked food. They can also disrupt the normal function of the endocrine system and affect fertility. These are some foods that contain parabens.

Artificial Food Dyes These include coloring additives like Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6. They are widely available in sweets and cereals. As cereal killers, they could adversely affect children’s activity and attention.

New York and California aim to ban popular snacks with these additives in 2025 and 2027. So whenever you satisfy your snack cravings, aim at getting healthier snacks without these additives. Also, Halloween treats should be monitored, as most sugary snacks contain these additives. Finally, a more appropriate approach to snacking is preparing an easy, healthy snack at home, as it makes you more conscious of what you consume.
